A friend of mine brought up an interesting sight to me today. In the guard codex, the entry in the back of the book for the plasma anything doesn't include the Gets Hot! rule. It merely mentions that there are additional rules in the 40k rule book. In the rule book, the Gets Hot! rule uses the plasma gun as an example, but it differs from the stat line in the guard dex.

Does this technically mean that Guard don't have the Gets Hot rule RAW? By RAI, yeah it's imperial plasma and would get hot.

I'm also told the Guard dex was from 3rd ed., so perhaps there is/was something written that would fix this? And yes I did read over the FAQ, though I could have missed something. Finally I couldn't find anything under this section eluding to the issue above.

There was a suppliment that came out about a year or so back called Codex Wargear or something like that. In that book there were updates to all the weapons that were currently in use by all published army lists if you can I would try to get your hands on that.

Only Tau weapons are exempt from Gets Hot.

The Wargear book shows the IG pg are indeed 'hot'.

Doesn't the wargear book also list SM Terminators as 3+/5+ saves? Why is it a valid reference?

Eldar Star Cannons are also exempt from the Gets Hot! rule...although they are only vehicle mounted so that issue never comes up

It does list them as 3+/5+ but I do believe that has been officially corrected. The Wargear book is an official supplement to WH40K and one should follow the rules that are listed in that.

As far as the terminators are concerned the Wargear book only deals with Wargear not unit entries, and thus those can be overlooked.

Eldar Star Cannons can be carried by infantry. In fact I have a 20 man guardian squad that uses one. They do not get hot.

If errors were the deciding factor in which publications aren't valid references then no GW publication would be a valid reference. In other words, just because it has an error doesn't invalidate the rest of the clarifications the book provides.

Thats because the pointy ears have had a lot longer to perfect the tech

And, as pointed out above, squads can take them on anti-grav platforms.

Thought about picking that book up at one point in time, then Tau came out, and it turned me off from the book. I shall look into it though; thank you.

All eldar 'plasma' weaponry is usually 'mounted', and thus ignores the 'gets hot' rule. Mounted on a construct, vehicle, or platform.

And because the pointy ears have been using it longer.
I think Q handles weapons research for the AM, judging by the gets hot rule.

Tau and Eldar have S6 Plasma - which is less powerful, but less risky. It's somewhat akin to the old rules allowing high and low powered firing modes. (There was 3rd edition rules for that in one of the Chapter Approved Annuals - 2003 I think.)
