I'm not sure I understand how it works in this game, exactly.

All I have at the moment is the Karman book (it was a test
to see if I would buy more of the stuff for the game. I want to
now), and I don't understand the army profiles.

Psst... Malf. You missed it in the Wastes

This is one important subject that is missing from the free online rulebook. Sadly, the page before this is explained is the last page in the free rules.

The "!" mark means that this is a compulsory unit chosen before any other units are chosen.
For example:

If a line has:
Infantry unit (**/***) !

You may choose either a ** unit or a *** unit as the priority choice.

Same goes for the rest of the choices in a "Platoon Pattern".

Here is a Karman "Libra Platoon Pattern":

Infantry Unit (*) !
Infantry Unit (***)
Infantry Unit (*/**/***)
Infantry Unit (*/**/***)
Armored Fighting Vehicle Unit (*/**/***), Infantry Unit (***)

Advantage:
At the end of his unit’s activation, each medic can bring back into the game a soldier of his unit who was eliminated.

Disadvantage:
All Karman units must include an officer.

What this means is that:
I have to choose a * infantry unit to take as the priority slot (in this case it means I must field either a unit of Anakongas or Kaptars) and
may choose from anywhere else in the list with the restriction of fielding
one more unit that is a *** unit,
two more units of * or ** or *** infantry units,
one more armored fighting vehicle units of which one must be a * or ** or ***, OR an infantry unit that is *** unit.

You may choose which units you wish to take after taking the priority choice (abiding by the platoon pattern restrictions). In otherwords, you dont have to go down the list.

This platoon pattern must be completed before you start on another platoon pattern. This is how AT-43 attempts balance by making you field X amount of stuff before you you field any more.

As for the advantages and disadvantages these should be fairly self explanatory.

[edited to make this more "karman-centric" for ease of understanding. I hope it helps ya.

So a libra force:

Anakongas or Kaptars (required)

then

K-Unit
Anakongas/Kaptars/K-Unit/Wendigo/Yetis
Anakongas/Kaptars/K-Unit/Wendigo/Yetis

and then my final allowance would be to field an AFV OR a soldier.

Interesting set up.

I think I'll be happy with with Libra. Guess I have an idea
of what to buy now.

I just randomly picked a sub faction from the karman book for the example (yes, I own all the books for AT-43 so far, its a bad habit I picked up from 40K) but the medic ability is a great boon, while the disadvantage really isnt a disadvantage in my eyes.

Quite powerful, infact.

Oh and registration has its privileges!

What's the difference AFV and Vehicle Units?

Oh, and model wise, is it just that you nominate a guy
as a medic, or does he get a specific model?

There is a specific Medic model usually; comes in the Unit Attachment box along with the other options (officer, special weapons etc.)

I don't think there's a difference between AFV units and Vehicle units. Karmens are the only faction (so far) that have AFVs that are not striders, but that's not really your question, I don't think.

The local store was supposed to have some Anakongas, a UA box and k-troops waiting for me, but they sold them by accident, so I guess I'm going to wait on my space monkeys. Did play another game yesterday (mission 5). Game plays very differently when on the table they recommend (in this case, a 60x120cm--or 2x4--table) than on a more conventional gaming board (4x4, 4x6, etc.)

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

Yeah, the book says that Libra has to pick AFVs, while
one of the other army types gets to pick Vehicle units
or something like that.

Hrm.

There does seems to be some minor inconsistencies in language here and there. I chalk that off to primarily translation (which in general seem pretty good)

Consider AFV and vehicle terms interchangeable.

Atleast, until they release more supplements down the road when they will really have to worry about correct terminology.
But the game is so basic right now, you dont need to worry about such.

Jeez...I am so used to there being no distinction in game, I completely forgot about this little bit:

Sorry Malf, I wasnt trying to give out faulty info..

[edit] This is from page numbers 47 and 48 of the advanced rulebook.

You can download the majority of the rules (with the exception of creating platoons) for free from the rackham websiteHERE

Thanks.

So a square is always a rectangle but a rectangle isn't
always a square, is that it?

I guess it'll make a difference should Karmans ever
get combat striders. I'll have to check the rules, though,
as in your example above they say combat striders "walk",
which implies that another type of walking might be in
an army.

Yeah, except when its a cirlce...er...or something.

Well, thats the weird thing. If you look at the stats for the easy-trike, it has the combat strider icon.

It clearly doesnt walk. It doesnt even touch the damn ground.

I guess that they didnt want everyone else to be in an uproar about it since no other faction yet has the category of "vehicles" available. Everyone is still on "combat strider" just like remedial math class.
