Had my first run in with the new Orks last night, was a brutal massacre that ended in a minor win for chaos. All the same, a couple questions from the game that we couldn't figure out for sure:

1) Old Zogwort's squigification power makes use of some pretty vague elements of the BBB, which mostly came down to 2 issues:
a -- Can Zogwort squig an enemy IC whilst Zoggy is engaged in combat? In this instance he wasn't actually in base, just his boys, and the Zog model is taller than the boys and the lesser demons fighting them. Basically, can a non-shooting power be cast in combat? We diced for it and Zoggy was too busy yelling to cast ...
b -- How does LoS into combat work? Just go by model size and if Zog can literarally see the enemy IC? In our case, my lord and my ally's sorcerer were assaulting a biker warboss, but while the big bike model clearly blocked LoS to my lord, the sorcerer was stuck out on the side and "in sight" of Zog. The rules I could find just talked about drawing sight through a combat, not into it, so I ruled with pure LoS that if the taller Zog model could see the IC he could squig it.

2) Does the bosspole let you reroll pinning checks? A simpler question, I just can't remember the distinction.

Thanks.

As an aside, I rolled for my lord's demon weapon 6 times that game, and got 4x !

Of course non-shooting can be used in combat. Unsure how that's not clear.

If the IC can have LOS traced to his base from yours then you can.

Base to base shooting is in the book. You don't use the model's eye view for anything except I can see your model so I can target you...then trace a line from your base (anywhere) to his base (anywhere). If you can trace LOS without anything getting in the way and are in range, you can shoot or use otherwise-eligible psychic powers.

Wow, those LOS questions have me stumped until I can get to my BGB. The Bosspole one is simple though. Pinning tests are simply a Leadership test and not an actual Morale check. Since the Bosspole only allows the reroll of a failed Morale check, it cannot be used for Pinning checks.

Hella bad luck on that Demon weapon, by the way.

Moz:
You: "Hold on, you rammed, that's not a tank shock"
Me: "Ok so what is a ram, lets look at the rules."
Rulebook: "A ram is a special kind of tank shock"
You: "So it's a tank shock until it hits a vehicle, and then it's a ram, not a tank shock, and then it goes back to being a tank shock later!"
Me: "Yeah it doesn't really say any of that in here, how about we just play by what's written in here?"

So let's sum up.

1a) Can a psychic power that does NOT specifically count as shooting a weapon be cast out of combat? Stelek says yes. Ignoring that squigification has an 18" range and affects an enemy model in LoS, there are many examples of psychic powers casting in combat - warptime, gift of chaos, fortune, etc. I can agree with this, as weird as it is to me (Fantasy magic users in combat, for example).

1b) Can an IC (in combat) claim LoS to an IC in combat? Stelek says it is a matter of tracing LoS from one base to another. I disagree, particularly as Zog's base was under a pile of orks, but the model himself was well over the combat (tall model). In the section on LoS through combats they talk about height of models involved, so I wonder if bases or model are in fact used for LoS.

The BBB says little about gaining LoS into combats, though it says you can't shoot into them so it's a moot point (at least to GeeDub back then).

2) Thanks Boss, that's what I was looking for.

The 'height' they mean is your SIZE.

If you are Size 2, and there is a size 3 model in the close combat; you can't see over it unless you can see over the actual height of the MC/Dread in said combat across the ENTIRE cc. Same goes for Size 3. DP's really do block LOS from Predators to Oblits, because the model is higher than the Pred to oblit sightline is. If the DP was size 2, it wouldn't mean a thing.

You always trace from one base to another on anything but vehicles (excluding dreads). You should be playing that way since it's in the rules. Check the 40K rulebook FAQ, it's in there.

If Zog is in close combat, he cannot 'see' the enemy base because his friends are in the way, then he cannot zap the IC because he cannot 'see' him. All size 2 models are really just a small 1" template. The whole 'real line of sight' thing only goes so far, ya know. Hey one snake eye can see your banner tip...I can see you! Ok, now trace line of fire from your base to mine. Oh you can't? Ok well you aren't a cylinder you are a footprint on that base, so while you can "see" me you cannot "trace" to me.

I know it's confusing, but thems the way they wrotes itz.
