It's not a game about micromanaging everything, its a game about managing queues and resources consumption. Building a factory dedicated to each unit type helps, that ways you can have it set to continually produce unit x, until you must upgrade. Keep the pressure on your opponents and try to raise your energy production or upgrade your mines. The actual speed of the units can be mitigated with a strong recon system of radars and spyplanes, allowing you to see where opposing forces are moving from a very zoomed out view. Truely you should spend most of your time zoomed out, only zooming in to build or create groups of units.

But it's fun to watch battles!
Part of it must be monitor size. Must...upgrade...monitor...

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

I've heard the same, that the game is more about managing your base than micro of your armies.
Supposedly the map is big enough that it supports flanking etc of your units.
It also has dual monitor support, if your card is capable maybe you can get a used 17" CRT for cheap.

Even if I could, I doubt my power grid could support yet
more electronic device. And anyway, I don't have the real
estate on my desk to make room for a second monitor anymore.

The trick for me is to really ignore everything once I have gotten past the first 10 minutes of the game. By that time I can just churn out a massive number of T1 units to take new mass deposits or hold my own, or I have teched up and gotten T2 turrets. That way I can spend most of my time thinking ahead, not worrying about what the foe will do next. If you can simply spam your opponent with troops or turrets then you dont have to pay as much attention to the nitpicky details of base defenses or assault. That way I can play it at +10 speed so the fun units show up faster (in real time not in game time).

I can't play Supreme Commander as it would break my computer, not me. I loved me some Total Annihilation back in the day though.

I think it was the fact that fighters move so fast that
I got mentally swamped by the game. I'm willing to give
it another go.

As mentioned above, SC is about economy and macro management. You shouldn't be treating each unit as an individual, but groups of units as strike forces. You then use those units in combination to break your opponent. I find that a general rule of thumb is that you should build 4x what you would in a traditional RTS game. I also don't tend to worry about loosing units, since replacements should be quickly on the way if your economy is working correctly.

Doesn't matter anyway. The computer gave up the ghost.
