So i am starting up a necron army and im trying to do it smarter than i normally do (just buy what looks good and hodgepodge it into a list)

So my tentative starting list chosen for cheapness and effectiveness is

1 lord Veil RO
1 lord Destroyer RO Phaseshifter

2 Units 20 Warriors (or 4 units 10 or 3 units 2 15 1 10 whatever yaknow)

3 Destroyers

2 Monoliths

1750 pts

45 necrons phase out number 11

It is one of the cheapest necron armies to make, cash wise, which always makes its own kinda sense. So from that perspective it is definitely a wise choice if you want an army and want to spend under 250$.

From a more competitive angle, I would suggest more destroyers. 40 warriors is a lot of shots, but 24" inches isn't a whole lot of range, and really you are going to excel at 12". Destroyers can fulfill many many roles as they are great at mowing down light/medium infantry, wrecking transports, and glancing tanks to death. That would be my suggestion since destroyers are cheaper squads to fill than say Immortals.

On a tactics note, I'd invest in a Shroud to add more mobility to the list to make sure you do get some warriors into rapid fire range off the bat. Having a 12 strong squad is ideal in my experience as its large enough to ensure at least some shots get fired but small enough to mitigate some of the risk of deepstriking a bigger squad.

Never attribute to malice which can rightly be explained by stupidity.

Drop the destroyer Lord and the 3 destroyers and buy more warriors or another monolith or immortals, or scarabs.

I think that 2 units of 10 Warriors combined with 16 Immortals will make this list one of the toughest around. Do what you can to fit them in. If you are going simply for low cost this isn't a 1/2 bad list.

im not really sold on immortals in this list. it seems to me you cant get much punch fom them unless you take 10+ and then you are looking at 300+ points which i cant get enough of from the destroyers (also a full unit is too expensive to get in metal so i would have to convert them up which is no problem but it would mean buying even more boxes of necron warriors and so will be a second wave purchase)

the scarabs do intice me on the other hand i havent seen them work to great in the games i have seen necrons play (admittedly the kid didnt know what he was doing) and the init 2 toughness3 ws2 thing does not inspire that much confidence in me

Keep the Warrior squads small (10-14) otherwise they don’t all fit within 2 inches of the Monolith Portal.

Always use 2 or more of the same “Necron” unit, and keep them within 6 inches of each other for We’ll-Be-Back (WBB). It’s not hard to wipe out a unit in one turn.

Keep your units in even numbers. This is a general tactic and means that your opponent has to kill a higher percentage of the unit to bring them below half strength. (This is just a general guideline and it’s common in any competitive tournament list).

The list I use is very successful in tournaments:

1 Deceiver
1 Lord [Staff of Light, Resurrection Orb]
2 Warrior Squads of 10
2 Destroyer Squads of 4
1 Scarab Swarm of 6
2 Monoliths

i dont know logic it seems like that list is way too light on the number for phase out. i only have to kill 19 necrons to phase you out

as to the warrior squads i see your point i was leaning towards 4 units of 10 anyway.

Im my opinion, I would only take one monolith and fill the rest of the points with destroyers. If you have multiple squads of them, it will make them much more survivable beacause you wont have to worry as much about being denied WWB.

2 x 3 destroyers is not enough. too easy to wipe out.

Destroyers at 1850 should come in zero, 9, 10, 12, or 15.

I would say 2x5 would be a solid choice to take if you want to go destroyers remember that if the squad gets annihilated from shooting you will not be able to res any of them. Though I am not sure where you will be able to get the points from. If worst comes to worse loose the scarabs to get those destroyers large enough.

I have had some success with this outlandish Necron army.

HQ Lord w/ veil
HQ Destroyer Lord with warscythe + Res Orb

EL - 8 Immortals
EL - 8 Immortals

TR - 10 warriors
TR - 10 warriors

FA - 3 Wraiths
FA - 3 Wraiths
FA - 3 Wraiths

HV - 2 Heavy Destroyers
HV - 2 Heavy Destroyers
HV - Heavy Destroyer

It is a bit unconventional, but it can hit hard in CC. The key is to have the wraiths attack in mass. They have trouble when they spread out. Their speed and the Res Orb from the Destroyer Lord, lets them get into fights across the board. I wish you could take more Wraiths in a unit, 3 is just so small, but all 9 together help out a lot.

I find myself spending the first 2-3 turns just getting into optimal position with the Wraiths and then springing on them with everything I can bear at once. The list does much better against small elite forces like Eldar or Marines and is a very quirky list to play. I am fortunate to have enough models to field several standard Necron lists and this one. This one gives the army a refreshing feel to play with after playing the same old, dependable Necron style over and over again.

If you can somehow squeeze a scarab swarm squad in there I'd try doing so. They're a nice way to tie up a squad for an entire game, more fun if you have a Destroyer Lord with a warscythe.
