A few things:

I'm worried that I don't have enough magic defense. With two wizards
and just three scrolls, I feel like a good archmage or something will take
me out.

I'm going to focus on three things in my game:

1. learning how to use the Warhawks (literally, I've never used them)
2. learning how the Treeman works (also another one I haven't used)
3. Try to get my matchups right with my expensive infantry block and
nice fast flank threateners.

The game is on January 15, so maybe not enough time for comment. I'll
be playing an Empire general, so I'll properly post some notes later on
what we figure out after playing our game.

Don't let that stop you, though, if something immediately springs to mind.

Couple of general points:

If you go with 2 mages, it's not bad idea to upgrade the other for lvl2 too. For a small point investment you get a nice boost for magic phase, especially as you have treeman also (with its bound spell). A shield for the highborn would be neat as it gives him the choice for better save in cc, altough I can't see too many situations where he'd use it.

Also, the champion upgrades for dryads and wildriders at least are very rarely worth it, you could almost get an extra unit of dryads if you dropped those.
(the wardancers & eternals are a different case, as you can run characters in them, in which case the champs have their uses).

Agree with Chaodlord's comments. Also, without spending too many points in mages (thus reducing your fighty hero count,) it's hard to break past 4-5 dispel dice for most armies (barring a few exceptions.)

Wood Elves in particular suffer a little less since you can hide better than most armies and provide your opponent less targets.

As to how to use Warhawks, I would advise you to treat them like most flyers - march blocking, enemy skirmisher/fast cav/war machine hunting...etc. They are rather pricey in points and I find a Great Eagle or two does the job almost as well. They can also be used to assissinate weaker Heroes (mages, engineers...etc) and escape due to their Hit and Run ability.

The Treeman is a mainstay in most WE armies and I'm shocked you haven't used one yet. His free Tree singing, durability, hitting power, auto-hitting shooting attck, and Stubborn 8 make him the best all round monster in the game. I would use him to tie up blocks you don't want to fight, or to pin units in place as Wild Riders and Dryads circle to the flank. A nearby BSB makes him practically Unbreakable.

A common tactic with the Treeman is to run him into your free wood turn 1, then surf him closer with multiple tree singings. He can then shoot and cause Terror from the safety of the trees (make sure he stays more than 2" in.)

For the future, I would reccomend running an Archmage (w/ Calaingor's Stave, 3 scrolls,) and a BSB as characters (throw in another mage or fighty character if you want, depending on what you want to emphasize,) and two Treemen. Only the most dispel dice heavy armies can stop the Tree singing on the free wood (which will shelter your Treemen, of course,) as the rest of your army encircles or sits back and shoots.

Good luck with your game!

Zoned: THat sounds like a mighty magic phase.

I had an advantage in this game in that he misapplied his
knights unit (12 strong?) and used them to try to bypass
my wardancers and Eternal guard and charging my noble...
who survived. It was a pretty rough game for him.

I had an advantage on the table. And fielding a Treeman
in the absence of Steam Tanks seemed wrong. My field
advantage was playing on a 4x8. My mobility did wonders
against his list.

I used the Treeman to force Terror checks, and to get
off Strangleroot attacks. He died to a Griffin charge, but
it was a close death.

I'm probably not going to include one all the time in the
interest of keeping things friendly and maintain variety
in my games.
