The original Talisman had the virtues of simple play, gorgeous art, and the ability for a group of 4-6 friends to play in a very relaxed, casual manner. It did tend to run long if the players didn't choose to push the action and start the run for the final objective (the Crown of Command) before they were 100% assured of making it. If you just wait around and explore and get your character strong enough to make the final stage easy, it takes hours.
That said, most of the popular adventure
RPG games that are popular today (Descent, Runebound, etc.) also take a long time, and while their greater complexity gives the play experience more depth, it also means they don't lend as easily to the hanging out, shooting the breeze and having a few beers mode of play which Talisman really supports.
