Subject: What's LOTRO like?

My friends got me to download the trial version, and
so my brother and I are talking about playing. They have
an average sized group on their server, maybe 12 active
players, so I was wondering what it's like to play as either
a burglar or captain. I'd roll as a minstrel, but then I'd be
annoyed playing with them.

I played this for awhile (bout 2 weeks). It's painful. It's a true WoW wannabe. The interface is exactly the same and combat is slower. Turbine just can't make a good MMO. I know you play WoW, I'd just stick with that. LOTRO has some great ideas like the world changing for just your character when you complete quests and whatnot, but it is a clunky WoW ripoff.

I'm hoping the presence of friends will mitigate the suck
factor.

I had fun with it but I wasn't really in the mood to pay a monthly fee at the time, considering my wife still plays FFXI.
It takes quite a bit from WoW, but it does some different things with the ideas.
I liked Captain, it is a fairly unique class. You hit with big weapons but your primary role is in keeping the party buffed through battle cries and such. They also eventually get a pet, in this case a squire, that follows them around and brings their banner into battle. Different banners give different bonus's and you can have the squire attack.
Burglar is a crowd control job. You use dirty tricks and attacks to slow the monsters attacks, movement, ect as well as being the best at setting parties up for special attack combos I don't recall the name of.
If you have friends to play with and a computer that can run it fairly well you should be able to have fun with it.

It will help, but all of my friends except one fell out of this one within a couple weeks. Just come back to WoW. You know you want to.

One of my favourite features of the game is that you can purchase and play various musical instruments in the game. You can even write songs now in a txt file and you can run an emote that will play the song you wrote in the txt file with your equipped instrument that way you don't always have to play the song live for people when putting on a show or playing in a band with friends. I used to spend hours just hanging out in a city playing my instrument with other random people who would stop by and play along with me or dance to the music. Pretty funny stuff that makes the game more like a living world as opposed to WoW which has become more of a graphical chat engine with side quests for todays youth. I hear LOTRO has also added a lot of content and player housing recently. I also enjoyed that once you hit level 10 you could start creating monster characters and playing for the dark side and in doing so you unlock points that let you enhance either character. Oh and your monster characters start at something like level 50 IIRC, letting you experience some of the higher level content right away. The fellowship abilities and titles you gain for doing things throughout the lands was also pretty cool and the all ready stated ability to actually alter the world you play in through certain game altering quests. Over all it was an improvement over WoW in many aspects, but required a better PC and an understanding of older lore. Oh and not really caring about raiding 40 man instances over an over again, if thats your thing stick to WoW. Although I belive LOTRO also has begun to release there huge group encounter type of stuff as well recently, but I haven't had a chance to start playing again.
Damn work... he he he

Tried it today. Got 8 levels (and a few levels of marriage
aggro) from my wife.
edit:
Captain was fun, even solo most of the time. I grouped a little
bit and found that enjoyable (no luck gaming with a Burglar yet).
I hate the "find the pixel" quests the game has going, and I
turned the graphics down to low since high settings shut down my
PC as I was playing with the avatar sliders.
It'll be worth a few days of rested xp, at least.

Could be a moot point. My second hand PC seems to like
shutting down whenever it runs the game.

This game is fairly heavy on requirements. I don't know why they decided to go with everything to scale like they did. Sure it looks cool, but it's an unnecessary tax on machines.

I'll play an okay game if my friends are there.
So...
I wouldn't play Matrix Online if you paid my subscription
and got my buddies to play.
I would play something average to game with my buds.
