Subject: How to base Imperial Fists?

Well, I finally painted all my Imperial Fists. I'm ready to move on to phase two, basing, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for what type of base to give them. They're bright Yellow, lemon marines, so I was thinking Brown Ice Tea basing with little ends of ice cubes sticking out. Seriously though, what base would look good with an Imperial Fists army? Should I jsut go standard tan sand with green flotsum? Maybe and asphalt to contrast the yellolw? Maybe snow since concern for being lost in an avalanche could be the only reason they go to battle in bright yellow?

I think the asphalt sounds pretty neat, it would certainly make the models pop a bit. Ive never done asphalt basing though im curios as to a good way to pull it off.

Hmm, maybe put a layer of greenstuff on top of the base, scratch it up a bit, paint it white or gray, paint black over it being careful not to fill in the recesses, and then dry brush grey ontop?

I bet plastruct makes a thin card w/ a great texture you could lay down. That'd be super easy and look great i bet. I feel like green stuff would be a nightmare trying to make asphalt texture. Unless you have something you could press it w/ that had a passable texture. I wouldn't attempt to score it w/ a knife, seems frustrating and probably wouldn't achieve the effect.

my current colour mix is -
gravel / railway balast base, black undercoat, dark flesh base colour then drybrush codex grey & final with space wolves grey. sounds odd but works - might work with the yellow as you have a hint of a warm colour with a neutral shade over.

I've been thinking about getting some "25mm ruins" from this company

Nice bases, not too expensive. I think my Imperial Fists will really stand out. The industrial bases might be a good choice to make the yellow pop.

My basing for the fists is black gravel base with white highlights, and gree static grass for added color. The monochrome base really contrast well with the bright marines.

a good way to do asphalt is to use a very fine, and even layer of sand on glue.
1. apply glue on base
2. apply sand
3. pat down sand so that its surface is not varied at all. a popsicle stick would work well for this on bases that already have minis on them.
4. let dry, paint.
This method may look odd as the feet will seem like they are sunk into the street... I guess you run into that problem in any case where you have the mini glued down before basing.
Other than this way, I am a fan of baking a layer of super sculpy and breaking it up before I apply it to the base, and then mount the mini on top of that.

here you go -
btw note on following posts - i always coat my gravel with thinned down PVA glue which stops the annoying gravel shed while painting them.

Another vote for urban rubble here.
In fact, you might work their seige-engineer background into the bases by doing them dark asphalt, with shattered bits of light-colored concrete on them. More important minis could stand on larger chunks of broken concrete to give them height. Twsited rebar on larger/character minis (easily made out of that twisted-wire stuff that some companies sell as "barbed wire") could make a Dread etc. look really badass.

a faster way to doing asphalt is:
mixing very fine sand (the color kind that goes in glass bottles works great)
mix with white glue.
add a little water.
mix until a plaste.
up on base and let dry. the fastest way is to do your bases without the minis on them and do them all at once.
once dry you can paint them

I know I said IF werent Tonka, but they are the premier Engineer force in the Imperium. Being previously hailed for their construction of the Palace, and their seige/assault prowess, it would seem proper to stand them atop the rubble of their enemies. So rubble, cut up sprue and gravel. good luck.

I'm going to be using the sand pressed flat with the popsicle stick method. If they look to sunken into the asphalt, then I'll take the models off their bases and put them back on. I bought a really fine sand that should look good. I'm going to use cut up sprue and tiny rocks to represent blown to smithereens debris.
