I hate asking this question but im unsure.

Can POTMS allow a Land raider to fire at a second target...

Crew BS 4 fire left at tank.. POTMS BS2 fires right at walker.

Quick yes/no will suffice...

No. The old 3rd ed Chapter Approved expanded vehicle rules, which introduced the machine spirit rules for the landraider, included the rule which allowed it to split fire. They also allowed the MS to shoot a weapon in addition to whatever other weapon/s could already fire, which allowed people to use the machine spirit to fire the TL assault cannon on a landraider crusader while moving 12", because it was in addition to the hurricane bolters.

When the current SM codex came out (Jan 05? About three years ago) they changed it to an upgrade which could be taken by other vehicles, named Power of the Machine Spirit. They added a movement limitation to the MS firing a weapon (only when moving up to 6"), and removed the ability to have it fire at a different target.

It's amazing how many players out there don't read their codex. Not meant as a dig at you, AtraAngelis. But I have run into a few SM players over the last few years who didn't know how it works.

That sucks because I had never heard of it firing at 2nd targets until a few days ago when I was playing Ultras and my opponent told me it worked that way. The list I was playing was one he had written up and I don't usually play my LR. Naturally, with this new 2nd target info I went right home and reworked my list with an LR in it....

Now it's back to the drawing board. It was seconded by another 5+ yr player so I assumed they had seen it on a forum or FAQ somewhere although you're right the RAW don't support this.

It's a common enough mistake. Land Raiders are fielded so seldom, that rule may have been in effect the last time he saw one!

Now i will toss another wrentch into the mess

The entry for POTMS in C:SM says it allows the tank with it to fire a weapon in addition to what can normally be fired.

We got into a bit of a debate on this when using POTMS on a vehicle with ordinance(the land raider ares is one such issue). some of my friends say that if you fire the ordinance because you could not "normally" fire additional weapons than the POTMS could not be used to fire additional guns(or vice versa). i countered that even a normal land raider that moves 6" cannot "normally" fire its second TL'd lascannon but it is understood that it can do so with the POTMS. there is also of course the online FAQ from FW that points out that the land raider helios can fire ordinance and additonal weapons thanks to the POTMS.

Sadly the old "split fire" rule with the machine spirit is long gone, but i see so many people who think it is still in use...

im confused, my buddy that plays SM read the entry for POTMS and doesnt it say flat out that it allows the vehicle to fire a second weapon at BS2 at another target as long as it hasnt moved at all?

i guess i'm just looking for the exact wording on the upgrade because i didnt think he could, he did and after he read it to me i changed my oppinion on it.

i think the line is something like....

"in addition, the spirit may allow the vehicle to..."

Read it yourself.

It allows the vehicle, when moving up to 6", to fire one weapon at BS2 in addition to whatever other weapons it can normally fire.

If you can find any text in the codex saying it can fire that weapon at a different target, please bring that copy of the codex to a computer, and post for us the exact wording, and what printing of the codex you have.

Well, I totally agree that you should not be able to split fire, it's not even inferred in the text. But I sent the fellow player this info and he responded with the fact that he had asked an actual GT judge who said it was legal. People must be getting this idea from somewhere. At this point I'd like to know what the "official word" is. Anyone know of any good, sanctioned FAQs out there? Links please, i'm lazy

They're getting the idea from the old rules, which allowed it. The new rules do not.
