All the Saurus blocks seem to be made up 4 wide.
But you get your rank boni from 5 wide in 7th edition. Does this apply for US 2 models too? My Ogre opponent applied rank boni with only 3 ogres wide ranks. So maybe this means Saurus blocks still get ranks for 4 wide ranks?

Thanks in advance.

Your ogre opponent was cheating. In 6th edition everyone had to be four wide to get rank bonus, and in 7th ed everyone has to be five wide. The only exception is Brettonian knights in lance formation.

This is actually a good thing for your Saurus, as they’re a bit on the expensive side for infantry, and you’re paying those points for their good combat stats. S4, T4, A2 means they’re well-suited to win combat by inflicting wounds. The wider your formation is, the more models you can get into combat and using those good stats, as opposed to standing in the back and cheering while giving you a flat +1 CR.

The only bummer is that GW’s movement trays are all still built 100mm wide. But you can make new ones. Here are a couple of good articles:

Vidar, if your ogre opponent wants to rank up his ogres three-wide, you let him. Then when he tries to claim a rank bonus, ask him to show you the rule that says ogres get a rank bonus for three-wide. There is no such rule. (I think there ought to be, but that's another topic) Don't let him claim a rank bonus. Then direct him to the Ogre Stronghold.com for good advice.

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

Thanks both of you. Now I have an idea how to glue my models. Also, you mention Sauri to be expensive and should get as much as possible into combat with less regard for ranks. Does this mean I'm best off fielding units of 10?

Also, now your slann temple guards can't have the slann directly in the middle, what a major downer concerning the fluff :( (actually more looks than fluff, but I wanted to complain like the old cow I am). Anyone any idea when lizardmen will be revised?

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

while we're on the subject, how about this: a unit of 12 w/ spears in two ranks of 6.

what do people think of it.

I think 6 would make it too wide and too hard to manoeuvre.

I used to see a lot of 12-strong Sotek Lizard units, ranked 6x2 or 4x3. They could change formation to best adapt to terrain and enemies, and even with 4 wide they were scoring 12 attacks on the charge.

Now... it just doesnt work the same. 6 Wide Sauri will all be able to attack against a 20mm base that is 5 wide. This gives up to 18 S4 attacks if marked with Sotek and if they charge, but they should be kept small as 6 wide is too expensive to afford multiple ranks. Unfortunately they are rather unweildly, still dont have the CR to really smash ranks, and require multiple units to get in the right combats.

sarus warriors need to be a rank of five to get the bonusus. now then onto ogres i think they get a rank bonus if they are 4 wide? notreally sure of that i play OK all the time but my oppenant only ever fields them inunits of three.

ogres get ranks if they are 5 wide. Only brets get the exception.

On the thoughts of ranks i would rank sarus 5x3. Gives you enough holding power with your attacks to take a charge from anything short of a full knight unit (use backup kroxigores to stop the knights) and you beat most units on the charge.

while we're almost on subject, did changing the # needed in a rank change the way the game plays at all? Presumably basic infantry units are now relatively more expensive relative to tricksy pure offense die rolling units.

What does LFDPS mean?

It changed a couple things. Combat units can have another model in the front unit fight meaning the relation of static combat res to death combat res shifted a little in favor of the death guys (6 knights kill a little more than the previous edition's 5 knight units did while the opponent gained nothing in terms of static res)

Ogre and other expensive units are now even less likely to have ranks.

Suicide units such as scaven slaves have to be bigger or risk loosing combat res to early.

Many extra ranks on basic units went away (unit sizes didn't change, spare ranks got lost)

And everyone's movement trays had to be re-cut.

"Looking for DPS." (MMORPG reference)

Anyway.

Yeah, Glade Riders come 8 in a box which is great, except
there's no reason to take 8 since they're fast cavalry and
you can't split the unit into two separate units.
