This old foegy is fresh off the newly cleaned up desk. The gray "green stuff" apoxy makes up his beard and hair. There is also hair on his chest, lower abdomen, and forearms. My painting skills aren't top notch, but my molding skills are definitely getting better.

The painting's fine. It's not going to win a Golden Demon, but it's neat (which is half the battle), and more than sufficient for a gaming miniature.

The beard is great. He really does look like a grizzled old veteran.

This is what Chuck Norris will look like in a thousand years.

The beard is actually fully textured (I've had one person who saw the picture think it was all hand brushed to appear textured), which was pretty simple, just some light jabbing motions with a straight edge and dancing the blade about a little, except for the edges of the hair on the top of his head, which was actually pushed around with a vertically held razor. I also JUST noticed I missed that oddly placed skull beneath the left arm there... sticking out in bright pewter....

This is a rescued unit that I cleaned up with brake fluid. I was disappointed with the only two heads GW has for the old Ogryns, so I started varrying them. Now none of my Ogryns have completely standard faces. My BONE is the closest to standard since I only thinned then shaped two pieces of pewter into plates for the top of his head.

insaniak is right, keeping things neat is the first step towards successful painting. My crit and challenge to you would be that your paints seem rather thick. I'd highly recommend you thin out your paint a bit and work in successive layers rather than thick gobby ones. You can get a nice solid color all the same and add detail all the while (color layering really pays off while doing this ^_^).

A tip toward bringing your metals along for the ride would be to use dark washes (water down your paint significantly) and cover the entirety of the metals. Come back over with your original metal color and highlight with a lighter one. For normal shading just use a simple black wash. If you want to give it a dirtier look, try a dark brown.

The greenstuff work looks great, and the model definitely gets the job done.

Hope some of this helps out a bit.

Most of the gobby painting comes from my paints directly. They sat and froze over at least one winter in the attic (which froze at night, then warmed up significantly in the day) and it made the paints funky. I reintroduced water to them, but they'll never be right again. It doesn't help most are already at least a year old.

I've never been a big fan of layering my paints. I usually do two to three coats, especially with these older pewter models. Most of the rest of the flaws come from the metal and the "stuff." As for washes, I used them for his skin detailing since I wanted the contrasts to be subtle and imperfect. I've noticed that an intense wash or inking tends to make the character look younger unless you carve in wrinkles into the paint. I've touched him up a bit since that picture, so the finish looks a bit smoother, though I haven't done anything to the metal bits yet, so I'll try out your suggestions, thanks.

No, I do have good ol' Nork, but he looks completely different. I've had Nork for a very long time now, though he's been demoted from body guard to BONE for the most part, unless I'm fielding Commissar Yarrick, in which case they both team up with my Command HQ which has all vets with souped up gear, a Senior Heroic Officer, a tricked out Commissar, and all the upgrades they can get. Team them together with my Stormtroopers and Ogryns, and they actually make a respectable assault section for an IG army. But, all that is so expensive there isn't much room for anything else...

I just took this guy down to a semi-local gaming store and I recieved rave reviews. Is this really a difficult or uncommon type of conversion?
