Had a discussion with another player recently regarding the Blood Angels codex and the rending rule, I'm curious if one of us is missing something, if the rules are deliberately vague, or what's going on.

Note that Blood Angels codex is located here

"All close combat attacks made by members of the Death Company count as being Rending."
I assumed that this means that the Death Company has rending weapons - a hit on 6 auto-wounds with no armor save allowed. Any non-6's which hit still need to roll to wound.

His position is that the use of the word "Rending," instead of "rending weapons" means that any attacks made by the Death Company which hit (say 4+ against Marines) automatically wound with no armor save allowed.

Am I mistaken, and Death Company are just that good, or do the Death Company just have regular rending weapons?

Wow.. was your friend simply musing on some RAW oddities that no one actually plays by, or seriously suggesting that the Death Company all have power weapons and never have to roll to wound??

No, this is a wishful interpretation at best. Your friend is suggesting that when you use a rending weapon, "the rend" is what happens on a roll of 6 (auto-wounding and ignoring armour saves)... and that Death Company count has doing this at all times.

Check the rule wording, but I am 99% positive that there are zero grounds to conclude that "count as being rending" means anything more than "follows the rending weapons rules, i.e., auto-wounds on a 6, etc..."

Rending means you roll a 6 and stuff happens. Rending is not THE stuff that happens.

They already get the benefits of re-rolls with litany's of hate to roll more 6's. Tell your friend that's plenty enough with out his interpretation silliness.

Having rerun my Blood Angels this weekend for gits, I can confirm that chappy + death co = the sex. Baal rerolling too.

Unfortunately apart from those two happy moments I was missing free furious charge for everybody and generally didn't like the "we're still marines, just moody / crazy / angry!" feel of the new armylist
