I have fallen completely in love with Forgeworld's Renegades and Death Korps, and so I'm plotting an IG force based around them.
The basic core of models I want to use because they look lovely are:
-Death Riders
-Death Corps Grenadiers
-Renegade militia and command
-Ogryn Berserkers
-Mutant conscripts and stuff.

So, from that I was thinking about a list along these lines:

HQ:
Command HQ Squad
Anti tank squads possibly?

Elites:
Ogryns, possibly in a Chimera?

Troops:
1 Infantry Platoon of 3 squads or so, weapons options are open to debate.
1 Armoured Fist Platoon (I'll use the Grenadiers for the models)
1 Conscript platoon, possibly with an agitator representing a Commisar to keep them fearless.

Fast Attack:
6 Rough Riders
Maybe a Hellhound (Are they any good?)

Heavy Support:
Probably 3 Leman Russ, at least 2 anyway.

Other possible additions are some Grey Knights represented by Chaos Marines.

So, what I would like is suggestions on how to equip and use this basic core. This army is going to cost a lot, and I'd like it to be playable.
Ogryns are pretty weak I realise, but I love the models so they're going to see some use anyway. Apart from that, I'd like to make the list somewhat competitive within the parameters I've set myself. I generally play quite agressively too, and I'm not sure if that playstyle will be rewarded by an IG army.
My main questions:
-Is the list concept lacking anything completely vital?
-Apart from the special unit doctarines, what would work well?
-Does it need more men, or should I consider going completely mechanised?
Feel free to criticise as much as you like by the way, I'm quite thick skinned .

People don't bring ogryns because they die too easily and don't do enough damage.

Hellhounds are great. They usually die immediately against hordes, and die after the russes do against marines.

You want a good firebase with lascannons for IG. 4 at a minimum is my recommendation.

Rough riders are ok, but not the be-all people think they are. Seraphim are just as viable.

You can play aggressively with IG. You have bodies to spare.

I don't favor completely mechanized IG, primarily because Chimeras are the suck. A balanced mix is best IMO.

Hope that helps.

Right. Well, even though I know they suck, I'm going to try and use the ogryns anyway. I played orks for years before this, so I'm well aware that T4 and multiple wounds are generally massively overcosted by GW, who don't seem to remember the Instant Death rules, ever.

So you'd recommend lascannons for my infantry squads? And the HQ attached squads? Ok, cool, can do.
Plasma would seem to compliment that the best as a secondary weapon.
Do you think I have enough bodies in there?

Plasmaguns as secondary weapons=bad. Just run lascannon units, and some vets/last chancers as all plasma units. Works best that way IMO.

Once you start going mech, you lose alot of bodies.
Do you have enough? Well, if you are between 50-60, you better be running elite guard units. If you are 80-120, you should be running some kind of mech. 120+ is usually no mech at all.

Both are viable imo.

Yikes. That's a lot of bodies.

Hmmm.

hi there ,
I'm working on a roughly similar army . Been playing Iinquisition for a few years now (got bored with marines ) and i'm working on an APOC renegade army (4000pts min) , mostly made of traitor guards . I'm thinking lots of infantry ,mecanized and not , hellhounds , sentinels , a couple of leman russes , one or two super heavy and some flyers .
The Ogryns ,i don't know about but i'm not crazy about their looks ,think i'll take some alpha legion marines .
One idea i had was to create a renegade cavalry outfit , the problem would be the horses , i'd like them to have an aggressive look ,not the bored palace guard attitude of the DKOK;
Been reading about the rough raiders on the net and they seem ok .
Like Da Boss ,any idea on the concept , the models ,or what tot take would be welcome
cheers ,
Shannon
