So unless you are into Vampire Counts don't bother with WD 338. I think it had 2 brief articles for 40K and almost nothing on any of the new 40K stuff.

Sure am losing interest in WD.

I'm into Vampire Counts. Anything good? What was the batrep?

Note that I haven't bought a WD since Chapter Approved was canned, but I'm still interested.

I'm buying WD less and less, in proportion to the increase in size of the section at the back with the storefinder etc, which is of no use to me.

Also, LOTR leaves me cold, but I'm quite interested in the Vampire Counts, so perhaps I'll pick this one up.

I wonder if I should edit the title to bring truth to the post: 'WD 338- Vampire Counts and a little 40k. That is all.'

I have VCs, and always buy WD so I'm doubly happy.

To save money GW might want to make WD once every other month. Then they can charge you 10 dollars for the same size book you get now.

It really doesn't make sense that they can't pull off a decent page count or any sense of truth in advertising. My knowledge of armies not my own is limited to target priority but when I saw the army list used against Orks in 336 i became a firm believer that they don't even try. Kinda sad.

Actually the batrep was VCs vs Empire and it was a draw with the empire player using a decent army.

So wait, how is this news?

Is the fact that WD issues concentrate on the latest releases news to anyone? Was this not common knowledge? Isn't that what they're supposed to do? In fact... isn't that one of their major selling points? "Bringing you the latest info on the hobby and the newest Citadel miniatures"? Correct me if I'm wrong there.

Though it does admitedly suck when it's a month for a system you don't play. As cool as the some of the LOTR minis may be, it's a real struggle for me to build any interest in those issues. (Do people really play LOTR? Honestly?)

Putting pad once again to the absurd notion that they rig WD's to win. Not that this will stop people from posting it every time a new codex shows up.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

it's just sad. even the issue with the new orks in it. I didn't see a single conversion in the whole magazine. and it was a magazine about orks.

Conversions require bits. GW likes selling boxes and blisters, not bits. Why would they waste space in their magazine on stuff that they don't want to sell?

What a frighteningly good point. I wonder if this will start a trend of how the only staff armies we'll see will be straight out of the box and the only time we'll see conversions will be in pics of the Golden Demon winners.

Agreed, thats pretty demoralizing and depressing. On the plus side, it will prevent GW from copying my stuff. I swear back in the day they had cameras in my place.

While I do share the anger and cynicism, I still think that is a bit alarmist. The strength of their imagery resides more in the thousands of conversions made by hobbyists than in the original sculpts. One builds on the other. I honestly believe if GW has forgotten that, they are done. Fortunately, I don't think they have, but they are swallowing a bitter pill of downsizing (or rather poorly upsizing) bitz opportunities for fans.

Without the ease of bitz service, plenty won't do it. Hobbyists like me care more about converting and building than almost anything else. If I see a bit I like, I am happy to order it, even if it is on a single reasonably priced sprue (which I think is extinct). I will NOT buy a blister or box set to get a single bit, on principle. We'll see how this new bitz catalog goes for a bit. I'm not ready to lose my **** yet.

But check back in a few months.

Okay, what were the 40K things. Just for the curious. Sorry if it's a pain in the ass but it can't take you too long to summarize them if there's almost nothing there, right?

RIP Chapter Approved. All it took was ONE stinkin' 4-page article with a trial rules for xeno mounts or something, and I would buy the whole stupid ad rag for just that.

I still do buy it to support my FLGS. That, a soda and some paint every time I drop in, cause every penny helps. I mean, I can't afford to buy GW boxes there anymore, so might as well do what I can.

And I am so, so pissed off when I see the large amount of content, fluff and good battreps that LOTR gets in the same damned magazine.

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Yeah I generally never buy WD anymore. I think the last issue I bought was back in 3ed when some ultramarine hero's or rules were in it. Since then I just read them at my local chapters on my lunch break. Works just the same since its basically just a flyer and no longer has rule updates.

Perhaps LotR sells a lot better than any of us are aware of?

GW is nothing if not mercenary, and as we've seen, GW simply cuts support for stuff that doesn't sell. -cough- Dark Eldar -cough-

Based on the sheer amount of support, LotR must be making GW some decent coin.

At least with 338 only containing "Vamps and a little 40k" we won't have to put up with whinging bigots complaining about "too much LotR" in the issue.

LotR is a core game which sells well and has been selling well for 7 years now. Get over it, FFS!

LOTR represents 10% of GW's revenue. Hobby supplies (paints, brushes, etc.) account for 25%. LOTR is no where near their top money maker any more. This is according Mr. Sherwin (GW's financial officer)
