Hey all. Longtime Warhammer fan here currently serving in the United States Army. I've been in and out of Warhammer since my time in junior high about ten years ago. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (RIP) got me back into things recently and I decided to join up and see if I can get up to speed.
My first major questions are about the new editions of both 40k and WFB. From what I can tell the new edition of Warhammer Fantasy Battles is 7th Edition with the Empire, High Elves, Orcs and Goblins and soon to be Vampire Counts Army books. On the Warhammer 40,000 side of things it's the 4th Edition with the Space Marines, Tau, Chaos Space Marines, Tyranids, Black Templars, Dark Angels, Eldar and soon to be Orks. Did I miss anything? I know that the books published before the new editions are still valid but I'm only wanting to pick up what's come out since the new editions were released. Any help would be most appreciated.

Welcome to dakka! Your 40k analysis is correct, but it is widely believed that 5th edition will be coming out in 2008 and that will almost certainly mean a new space marines codex too.

5th Edition already? They haven't even updated all of the armies to 4th Edition. Oh well I've got very little else to spend my money on now that WFRP is gone. Where'd you hear about 5th Edition?

4th edition was more like 3.5th edition, and 5th edition is another small step instead of the massive leap that was 2nd-3rd, but people have a lot of opinions on armies being left behind. Check out our news and rumours forum for some of the threads that explain the potential 5th edition in more detail.
