Moving to Philly in the next couple weeks, looking for 40k scene.

Any help/suggestions would be great.

Where are you moving? Philly's a big city and your options will depend on where you live and how far you can travel.

How old are you?

If you are willing to drive, or are moving into Northeast, your best bet is the Franklin Mills GW Hobby Center. The place is unfortunately a little disorganized and packed with children, but the few handfuls of adult regulars are pretty solid guys.

I live in Southeast and I make the drive because I only have a couple days a month to spend on 40k anymore. I hear there is a comic book shop on South street that has a Warhammer day, but I never investigated. I've been here for school for about two years.

Let me know where you're moving. Hope this helped!

Thanks for the note, guys. I'll be settled into Philly by the middle of March, currently looking at apartments in the South Philly area maybe up in Fishtown, in any case the city central area.

Age-wise I'm in my early forties, so any situation with screaming kids is just not happening. I prefer to avoid GW outlets altogether, but I'm ready to be proven wrong. I'm a full-time professional artist and a game veteran- I love to paint and convert, I love to scratchbuild, enjoy a couple drinks while I'm playing, and I take on complicated terrain projects. Like most old guys I don't have as much time to play as I'd like, so the quality of the scene is paramount.

I'm campaign player. I have a car, so travel is fine.

Thanks again!

I had to swallow my pride and brave the swarms of young monsters once I moved from the basement gaming setting. If you do decide to try the GW, it is most calm on the weekdays and 40k night is on Wednesday. Those are the days you'll find mainly adults and twenty-somes. Good luck!

The FM GW store is OK. I know the manager and he's a good guy, but some of the kids are very annoying. The adults I've met from there are nice guys though.

Alternatively you could look at Showcase Comics, they're not in Philly, but it's pretty close and he's got two locations. I've been there only a few times, but it looks like a great shop and the owner is a nice guy as well.

I live 15 minutes from Center City Philadelphia, and we play at my place quite a bit. But we're all uber competitive and generally play very hard and optimized armies because we're so involved in the tournament scene. If you're the type that doesn't want to be bothered with figuring out the statistics of when you should field striking scorpions over harlies, then we're not the group for you.

But if you are, or want to be, just look us up when you move. We're all in the 25-40 range (I'm 36). But most of us are more into fantasy right now (I know I am) and 40k will probably be on the back burner until V5 comes out.

Smashotron and Voodoo- Appreciate for the info, I'll look into it once I get my feet on the ground and see what I can scare up.

Mauleed- Thank you for your invitation. If nothing else I'd love to stop over on a gaming night and say hi, see what you're up to. The statistical game isn't my forte, but then you never know. It's always great to meet people and see what all is out there. I'll be in touch in the next month or two.

Rock on, Dakka.

Hey major_slovak,

There is a small group of us who play in Northeast Philly, just off I95 near the Bucks County Border. We're mainly painters, converters (always looking to improve), with a dash of GT players, but overall a laid back group.

We've avoided the GW store scene due to the mall aspect, and mostly do basement gaming. We're all in our mid-late 30's, early 40's. We also do Gothic, Mordheim, WHFB, etc.

Drop me a PM and we can exchange some info, etc.

Another vote for the Showcase Comics in the Granite Run Mall, Springfield, PA. About 1/2 hour from the northeast. Probably the most complete gaming store in the area and the owner is a real nice guy.

I heart SYR 8766

For all your bravado, if the US Army decided to invade, Wisconsin is it?, in force supported by a heavy bombing campaign for the month before, weeks of shelling from battleships on Lake Superior, and a full tank thrust (crushing the cows beneath the treads), I don't think that your .22 is going to make much of a difference really... Asmodai (my new hero)

At some point these sorts of decision-making skills lump you into the same camp as the Lehman Brothers, the White Star Line shipping company, and mothers who smoke during pregnancy.

Showcase is awesome.

I'm in Bucks Co., and while Whitescar can attest to my lack of 40k-ing, I'm in the area as well and can play, should the mood strike. There was once a pretty good tournament scene in this area, don't know what it's like now. I also do 'munda, mordheim, and those other games (Warmachine/Hordes etc.). There's an okay WM/Hordes and AT-43 action going on at Abington Games, but Showcase is still your best bet.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

Showcase is a great place to play and get those non-GW paints brushes and accessories that a lot of people like. As Ed said there is a group of about 8 of us over in Cherry Hill who game almost every weekend and sometime during the week night depending on schedules.

There also is a local Fantasy GT if you are intrested in called the Colonial. Currently registration is full with 100 registered attendees and over 20 people on the waiting list. you can go here for more information.

www.thecolonialgt.com

If you are going to be in south philly Showcase and possibly the Vorhees store might be your best bet (about 15 to 20 min drive to each) Franklin Mills is about a 30 min drive with traffic on the northern end of the city.

Let us know when you move on up here and come over and get some games in and display your figs.
