I am looking to create a Tau Army all comers list (I know its not easy), but would value input from Tau players.

Main armies I am likely to face are Tyranid (Zilla/Steeler Shock), Eldar (Eldrad as Quarterback with Harlies, Scorpions, Spiders etc) and heavily tooled up Chaos Marines.

its a 2000pts list that can go to 2500pts, is that wise with the Tau list?

HQ:
1 x Shas'O with MP and plasma and HW multi, HW Drone controller and 2 Shield Drones, 142pts

1 x Shas'el PR MP TA MT 97pts

Elites:
2 x XV8 Deathrains comprising:
1 x Twin linked Missile Pods, TA
1 x Team leader has HW Target lock 116pts

2 x XV8 Deathrains comprising:
1 x Twin linked Missile Pods, TA
1 x Team leader has HW Target lock 116pts

Stealth Team: 6 X XV25's with Burst Cannons 180pts

Troops:
12 x Fire Warriors, all have rifles (1 FW upgrade to Shas'Ui).
Transport Fish with MT DC 225

12 x Fire Warriors, all have rifles (1 FW upgrade to Shas'Ui).
Transport Fish with MT DC 225

10 x Kroot with 8 x Hounds 118pts

Fast attack:
Pathfinders X 8 (with Shas'Ui upgrade with HW TL) 111pts
Devilfish 120pts (SMS, TA, Multi and decoys)

Heavy:
XV88 Team Leader with A'S'S, HW target lock, BS filter and HW multi, HW DC and 2 Shield Drones 130pts
1 x XV88 with A,S,S and BS filter 85pts
Team bonded 5pts

2 X Hammerheads with RG, BC, Multi and DL's 330pts

Is this list good as an all comers? Its at 2000pts what improvements would you advise? ALSO, i am willing to consider 2500pts if so what chages would you make?

Hmm...alright, in my view the Tau's good stuff comes from their crisis suits and skimmers, so you need to maximize that sort of thing.

HQ:

I think your guy needs to drop the shield drones so he's still and IC. I'd simply clone the Shas'el.

Elites:

I'd say go fireknife instead of deathrain. I'd also think you'd want more crisis suits but I'm not up to date on Tau point costs. I've definitely seen more suits on the table than you've got. I'd drop the Stealths for more crisis suits.

Troops: I'd take less fire warriors and get warfishes. You ought to be able to get a bunch of these. I'd drop the Kroot.

FA: I'd drop the PathFinders, just put those points towards warfishes and crisis suits.

Heavy:
I like the HS selection. 2 railheads and a pair of broadsides (not sure those need the bonding knife though)

My commentary basically comes from this one boss list in ATL, bunch of warfish, crisis suits, 2 railheads and a pair of broadsides. It works pretty well vs. everything but Necrons, but I think that's a codex wide problem.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

I think you have the right jist of a tau all-comer list...But there are many changes to be made XD...

HQ: 'o has 1 too few weapon slots filled and 'el has 1 too many...I'd go with a ninja'o instead of what you've got...but thats just my opinion...

Elites: I'd use fireknives instead of deathrain as 40kenthusiast said...

Troops: For the love of tau get rid of 'em kroot and make better fish of fury squads...

Fast Attack: Pathfinders are virtually useless for tau... use those points for pirannahs they're much more effective...

Heavy Support:Good setup... fine the way it is...maybe change one railhead to an ionhead...
