Well bit of a discussion question for those of you that have free time on your hands. Do you think dreads (both SM and Chaos) are getting an indirect boost? I think they will be a little bit more survivable with less anti-tank weapons on the table and more of a focus on troops. I also think they will become more useful in their ability to provide fire support "over the heads" of your own troops without having to worry about fire lines. OTOH dread armor still sucks and you would probably need at least 2 to be effective. Discuss...

With the loss of +1 attack for having PF+CCW, they will take a few less attacks in melee as well.

If people are fielding more vehicles, it will help make dreads more survivable due to more targets. And if footslogging GEQs/OrcEQs are prevalent, people may be dropping lascannons for heavy bolters, etc.

I agree that indirectly, they're getting a boost.

Flamers seem to become better next edion. With "run" Dreads get more mobile.

I think in general they are going to get boosted right along with other vehicles, in that they can not be directly destroyed on a glance, and are less likely to be destroyed on a pen., along with all the changes stated above.
Now, will that make them better than tanks? Maybe, maybe not. I think they might be cool, but still not quite as strong as tanks point per point. I hope I am wrong though.

I'm hoping they will finally be a playable unit. I really like the Dreadnought models and fluff behind them. Sadly, they rarely will survive.

Cover saves seems to be their biggest boost. Running to keep up with transports and being able to set up a firebase seems plausable. I think they will have a better chance with 5th than current.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Drop Pod assault ven dreads won't be as good. Smoke only offers a 5+ save.
For people not familiar with this you drop pod a Ven dread and pop smoke the turn you come down. Makes you as hard to kll as a falcon. next turn you can run into assault.

All out of witty one-liners.

The fact that they will be able to benifit from cover saves will be a huge boost. The afore mentioned more forgivable damage chart will also make them a much more solid unit as well.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.

Why the heck would you do that? the entire point of podding them in is to be able to get up close to your enemy and flame/assault cannon them the turn you arrive.

i would not waste loosing that much firepower on the off chance i survived to get 3 CC assault attacks off the next turn i charge.

Not being able to fire two weapons on the move is a notable nerf to alot of walkers. Even my ac/hvy flamer dread will miss using both before the charge.

Mind you, it does wonderful things for my Furioso/Chaos Dreadnought by comparison. A Heavy Flamethrower blast before it hurls itself into combat is handy for prepping a unit before landing on it. A Melta-gun really doesn't do much unless it's Meganobz, in which case the option can work out.

Beh not really.

Most players won't move their dreads during a game, instead they'll give them a primary weapon (las, plas, ac) and a missile launcher. They make fine mini-preds hiding behind terrain with cover saves. There's no point in doing the hide, move, get shot (and live!), move, hide + repeat junk anymore--everyone can see you unless there's another tank in front of you.

Drop pod dreads are still perfectly viable, even if you can't be as uber as you used to be you also don't need to fear smurfs. If they don't get lucky and kill you via the first turn charge, they're gonna eat dreadnought death for a while.

Orks will light you up though. Bring a heavy flamer so you at least tickle them pink before they take you out.

Oh and Chaplain led assault squads will still see off regular dreads. Vens have a better chance of surviving, but not by much.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I would like it if dreads get a a 'slow and purposeful' d6 move with two weapons fired. But they do not need that nerf unless move and fire two weapons penalties also apply to monstrous creatures too.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

How about 9 Killa Kans and a Mek with KFF? Safe against conventional fire and now with a 5+ cover save in 5e. They only have one weapon and are decent in CC.

It's situational. Some armies I drop down flame and AC and rinse and repeat. but when I pod a IG gunline and am staring down 12+ lascannons .Popping smoke and rushing into their lines, ruining their shooting, saves the day.

All out of witty one-liners.
