Subject: Black Templars 1850 Points - Tournament List
|
 |
Perfect Shot Black Templar Predator Pilot
|
In lieu of what has turned out to be a pretty ineffective IG Tourney List, I've decided to put together a Black Templars list instead. I think this one has a lot more power behind it, and although it is lacking in the anti-tank department, I think I'll be in good shape come game time.
As always, comments and criticisms welcome. Here's the list
Black Templars 1850 Points - Tournament List
HEADQUARTERS
Marshal w/ Lightning Claw Pair, Terminator Armor, Crusader Seals
Grimaldus w/ MC Plasma Pistol, Crozius, Rosarius, Crusader Seals, 3 Cenobyte Servitors (w/ Holy Relic)
Emperor's Champion w/ Abhor the Witch
ELITES
Grey Knight Terminator Squad (6)
Dreadnought w/ Venerable, TL Lascannon, Missile Launcher, Extra Armor, Smoke, Tank Hunters
TROOPS
Crusader Squad (8/8) w/ Power Fist, Meltagun
Crusader Squad (8/8) w/ Power Fist, Meltagun
HEAVY SUPPORT
Vindicator w/ POMS, Smoke
Vindicator w/ POMS, Smoke
Vindicator w/ POMS, Smoke
* * * * *
1844 Points
44 Models, 4 Vehicles
* * * * *
I'm currently unsure as to whether or not I should deep strike the GKTs and attached Marshal. It will probably depend on the mission - at the very least, they'll lay out some light AP fire and soak up a lot of the enemy's shooting, taking pressure off Grimaldus, the EC, and the 32 Marines that'll be following - not to mention the 3 Vindicators with Power of the Machine Spirit.
I see this list as a somewhat slow moving, but ultimately very hard-hitting army, one that will likely move up the field in a tight blob, spewing out 24" range death at everything. Let me know what you all think.

I don't know Black Templars from a blue mohawk, with the exception that they are, of course, marines.
You are right, this list may be death, but it'll be creeping death. I would love to face it, simply because it would be different from anything I've faced for a while.
I have never seen the "3vin" list in action, however I have heard good things about it. Abviously, some good AT action is going to ruin your plans abit, but with that many treads on the ground it's to be expected. You face Baity's orc army, watch out for his lootas; he'll need 6's to glance but he stands to be able to throw a TON of S7 shots at that front armour.
This list should do well, but I'll be interested to know HOW well. And run downs of the armys you face. and batreps. and pictures. and dancing girls...

This list needs more troops.
Take 3 large Crusader squads accompanied by EC and 2 Reclusiarchs.
Keep the Vindicators and add some Dreads for extra armour piercing.
This would be a force to reckon with. If you face hordes, add a couple of Tornados.
Leave Grimaldus and GKs at home.
Just my 2 cents.

Oh don't worry, I'll definitely be doing some batreps. Probably won't be picture heavy, since my army is mostly grey plastic (unpainted... the horror!), but I'll definitely get a couple lineups of each army.
Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye out for Baity. I'm looking forward to playing against some new blood, so to speak - playing Necrons, Tau, and GK every single time is getting to me.
I've never fielded Triple Vindicators either. Doubles, several times, but now that my third and final Vindi from that coveted Linebreaker Squadron is done, I should be having some fun times with the scatter dice and pie plates.
At 1850, I'm just hoping my opponent won't have enough dedicated anti-tank to drop all 4 of my vehicles. The Dread will be a cherry picker in the backfield, while whatever survives the march across the field will connect with my opponent's lines and hopefully bring a bloody end to the game. Should be fun.

Good idea wuestenflux, but I don't think I could field that in an 1850 points game. I do have a lot more marines in my fully beefed out 5000 point army list. It's a real beauty to throw down over 150 Templars, for sure.

Crusader squads are not really expensive: 8 Initiates with melta and powerfist, and 8 Neophytes.
Add 2 Chaplains and the EC to them and these squads are absolutely amazing thanks to their special rules.
The rest of the army should be able to pierce armour. That's my understanding of a competitive BT army.

8x8 Squads are definitely a favorite of mine. Right now though, it would require me to buy new models to field additional squads. I already own almost everything on the list I just mentioned - I don't want to drop a 100 bucks just to play in one tourney.

Pardon the resurrect. Just wanted to see what you all thought of the final version of the list. I did some tweaking in order to accomodate for the fact that my FLGS did not have enough Scout Boxed Sets. Here ya go:
Master of Sanctity w/ Crozius, Combi-Meltagun, Terminator Armor
Terminator Squad (9) w/ 2 Assault Cannons
Grimaldus
Emperor's Champion w/ Abhor
Dreadnought w/ Venerable, AC, ML, EA, Smoke
Crusader Squad (10 Init) w/ PF, Melta
Crusader Squad (10 (Init) w/ PF, Melta
Vindicator w/ POMS, Smoke
Vindicator w/ POMS, Smoke
Vindicator w/ POMS, Smoke
1850 Points exactly. Not the most model-heavy list, but I think a combination of Fearless, Zealing Terminators and Power of the Machine Spirit Vindicators rolling forward, it will make for some interesting games. Right now the only thing I'm worried about is fighting mechanized armies, which will dance around me like it's their job, and anti-tank heavy armies like Lascannon IG or Railgun Tau.
Anyway, let me know if you like/dislike the changes. Tourney's this Saturday.

I'd replace Grimaldus by a cheap Reclusiarch, delete 4 Termies, and add another Crusader squad
Good luck!

Well, you know what your weaknesses are. This is good.
Hopefully you won't face them lol.
You are also vulnerable to all-marine armies...

@wuestenfux:
If I had the models (as well as the time to assemble and paint them), I'd take two Reclusiarchs with Terminator Armor, two 6-man 2 AC bodyguard Terminator Squads, and 8-man Init squads instead. Everything else wouldn't change. I'd have to figure out how to go from 1823 to 1850. That list would definitely be strong.
I like your idea of more marines though. Don't have the money or time to assemble, so no dice.
@Stelek:
The first step on the road to victory - know thine enemy, know thine self.
Too bad Marines and Mech make up 2/3 of all armies in existence. I haven't been in this gaming area long, but I've heard Vanilla Marines are pretty popular around here.
Oh well. I'll at least have some battle reports to write up for you all. No pictures though - there's the forewarning.

I like Grimaldus a lot but his strength is in taking the place of the babysitter chaplains. in a list with grimaldus, you shouldn't need another chaplain.
Also, i think that Grimaldus doesn't shine until you are running Black TemplOrks... This list you have here is more tactical and less black wall of doom.
I might suggest dropping him completely. Big crusades with cenobytes tend to get more respect from me than 10 man power fist delivery systems. but they don't necessarily mesh with wanting to get large blasts fired every turn.
I think I'm having a hard time putting a useful critique together because I haven't really played or seen templars played the way i think you are planning to use them.
Hoping for a psyker, getting good turn 1 vindi shots off, i get. but what is the hellfire dread for? Is there a specfic unit you are concerned about? You definately have the hard armor stuff covered with the 3x str10 ordnance.
I don't particularly like putting the chaplain in what essentially is a shooty unit. If you were to run that termie squad why not just try for a bit cheaper marshal. I don't see the termie squad choosing to Zeal forward very often. So the extra flexibility in zeal direction might not be worth it to me.
Good to hear you are gonna be batrepping this. Triple computer vindis are damn good. Double AC termies are a good compliment to it. But then templars have such a hard time getting teleport homers, and don't have any lascannons, which really turns how you support your termies and vindis on its head.
so the sumary of this post is, i think grimaldus is better in horde tempar armies, i like crusades to be bigger (hard to take advantage of a zeal roll if he kills your 10 man unit to a man), and I think using this list will be 'complicated'.
Let me know how it goes, i am definately intrigued...
