Just a quick question. I'm almost sure I know how this is supposed to be played. I think it was played incorrectly in a game that I was in over the past weekend but since I was losing the game anyway I didn't push the subject. Anyway. His single hive tyrant was locked in combat with 3 of my units. His carnifex charges into one of the units and completely kills it. Since his carnifex wasn't engaged with anything in btb anymore, he massacred and moved him on into something else. I believe that the carnifex he charged in is now stuck into combat with the other 2 units as well, thus could not massacre. Which was is correct?

Again I didn't push the issue right then since I was losing and it would've been petty of me. I'd like to know for future ref. Thanks

So, the carnifex should be locked in combat with a unit because the hive tyrant was?

umm?

It sounds like it was played correctly.

If the carnifex had charged all three units successfully, which could happen, then sure. . .
If all models in the units that were NOT charged are more than 1" from the carnifex after it charges (if not, the charge cannot be valid) it CAN massacre and all that.

I'm happy to concede that I'm incorrect...Just to make sure I understand. I thought it was all one melee, thus all participants are locked until there is no more melee left. Since there was still 2 more units of mine left the melee wasn't over. Was I wrong?

He what?

A Massacre is when one side completely destroys the other. It simply means that you won the combat without having to tally wounds inflicted... it's not something that you do.

A combined combat is all one entity. If the Carnifex destroyed the unit it was engaged with, at the end of the combat the wounds inflicteds by the Carnifex count towards the Tyranid side's Combat Resolution.

At the end of the combat the Carnifex is now a unit that was locked in the combat, but is not now engaged. So if the combat is ongoing (ie: neither side ran away), he is now forced to Pile In.

"At the end of the Assault Phase, all units that were involved in a multiple combat must make Pile-in moves towards enemies that were originally in the combat." pg. 45 of the mini rulebook.

This is from the Multiple Combats section of the rulebook. There is additional information concerning these types of events, especially in the last paragraph.
