So there's a de-emphasis on the 3rd ed adversity rules that prevented Khorne and Slaanesh or Nurgle and Tzeentch from teaming up. I'm just curious if the 3rd ed adversary setup was ever fleshed out further in any other bits of fiction, or if it was purely a 3rd ed codex blurb that is now being overwritten.
Translation: How justified is all the chaos nerd-rage over mixing marks? "A so-and-so daemon prince leading those guys!? Raaaage!"

IIRC, the antagonistic nature of the Chaos gods (K vs. S, N vs. T) goes back before 3rd ed (I seem to recall rules in 4th ed Fantasy when I first started playing).
So the nerd rage is justified and I would never mix marks in the way you are describing. But the 40k universe is a big place and I can see almost anything happening.

It's in Realm of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness (RT & 3rd edition Fantasy).
I never got why Khorne and Tzeentch was an ok combination though.

During Rogue Trader or early 2nd Edition, GW published 2 large books dedicated to Chaos... The Realms of Chaos. As far as I know, these were the 1st books to flesh out the Chaos powers and this is where they described the animosity between the various Gods. Khorne's hatred for all things spell casting has been around for a long time and is much more than a codex blurb.

the animosity between the gods goes all the way back to slaves to darkess and lost and the damned. it has been there since GW started their universe.
Quote, Slaves to Darkness
Slaanesh: Slaanesh has a neutral attitude to many of the gods of chaos, and is generally too caught up in his own pleasure to be interested in alliances and co-operation. Particular enemies are the followers of khorne, whose belief in pain and death is completely opposed to slaanesh's principle of a life of unrestricted pleasure. followers of nurgle and tzeentch, the other two powers of chaos, are subject to slaanesh's neutral attitude.
Khorne: Followers of khorne have no friends and few long term acquintances - all are soon to be sacrifices to khorne. Even another follower of khorne may try at any time to offer their lives to the blood god! Followers of khorne may have allies for a short time bt they are always aware that all other intelligent beings fear and hate them, and will seek to destroy them at any opportunity. the followers of khorne treat slaanesh worshippers as particular enemies. the two powers personify entirely opposing concepts of the nature of chaos.
Quote, The Lost and the Damned
Nurgle: Nurgle is the eternal enemy of the chaos power Tzeentch, the lord of change. Nurgle and Tzeentch draw their energy from opposing beliefs. While the energy of tzeentch comes from hope and changing fortune, that of nurgle comes from defiance born of despair and hopelessness. The two great powers never lose an opportunity to pitch their forces against each other, from mighty battles on the chaos wastes, to complex political intrigues among mortal men.
Tzeentch: Every power of chaos has his opposite number, another power whose nature is the antithesis of his own. Tzeentch is the eternal adversary of Nurgle. His energy comes from the excitement and will to change, to forge one's destiny, change fortune, and gain power. This is quite opposite of Nurgle, whose power comes from defiance of despair and hopelessness.

They used to have a rule where they would attack each other along the way.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

I do feel ashamed when I field 1k sons and lash princes along side my berzerkers. This codex has made me a blasphemer in the eyes of Khorne. Forgive me, oh great and mighty Blood God!

I always thought Khorn and Tzeentch would hate each other since Khorn is so anti-psycher. Also, wouldn't Slaanesh hate Nurgle since disease is the only real bane to pleasure?

The biggest problem I have with mixing the powers is trying to find a unifying color scheme that makes them look as if they're a cohesive army, rather than just separate units of anyone's army.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack |
