What should I do with the models I have for a competitive 500 pt list:

Broodlord
Lictor
6 Warriors
about 40 hormagaunts
around 30 gaunts that can be either termagaunts or devourer-gaunts
6 genestealers

I will be playing against Tau, Space Marines, and Imperial Guard.

Anything really. 500 points isn't very competitive it's more fun than anything else.

We might go up as high as 1000 pts, what about then?

At 1000 points alot of people will be running battleforce armies.

If you can afford it, run 5-6 MC and some stealers.

If you can't, run a bunch of basic troops (gaunts, stealers) with the broodlord and the warriors keeping them moving up.

Hope that helps.

Don't buy the Hive Tyrants, they're metal and horrible to convert.

Buy the plastic Carnifex boxes and convert two to be Tyrants.

Be alot easier than you think. I didn't do this and I regret it every time one of the Tyrants pinned parts comes off. :(

A quick way as to how to convert a plastic Carnifex into a Hive Tyrant is to put the torso on upside down/backwards, as this will make it stand up taller rather than hunching forward. To get really fancy, cut the back armor plates off and flip em around so they still go the correct direction. If you want I can throw up a picture of mine later.

I recommend breaking your models down into as many small units as possible. Take the Broodlord and Genestealers as your HQ, with two Warrior broods and your Lictor as Elite, and then spreading your Termagants and Hormugaunts around your six Troop choices should make for an interesting game. Giving your broods, particularly your Termagant broods, Without Number will be a nasty surprise at five hundred points!
