So I am part of an escallation league and am also a new player of the Warhammer 40k tabletop. We are currently in round 2 and i have so far lost every game up until this one! My first win!!!! So here's the scenario it's a take and hold mission with my setup being the following

HQ: Shas'O with multi tracker, fusion blaster, and missile pod (he's hitting on 2+ )
Body Gaurd: 2 Shas'vre both with targeting arrays and twin linked missile pods
Troop: One 10 man Firewarrior squad with two carbines and one upgraded to a shas'ui with a markerlight
Transport: Devilfish with Smart missile system, multi tracker, and 1 seeker missile

This is my foes setup

HQ: Farseer with a lance that I can't remember the name of
Troop: 1 Ranger Squad, and 1 Gaurdian sqaud in a Wave Serpent with Shuriken cannons

Okay so I won table sides and obviously chose the side with the most cover, it was a clear area surrounded by two forest and one impassable with my Crisis Suits to the left and my Devilfish to the right. I also one first turn roll but let him go first. He has his Ranger squad at the other end of the table inside a bunker that he can shoot out of, but they don't come into the battle until later. He first moves his Wave serpent behind my wall of cover, then moves his Farseer to about 2" from the rear of his wave serpent (so he can deploy his troops when he wants obviously)

He then goes into his firing phase. His Wave Serpent hits my Crisis Suits but they make all their saves. His farseer uses it's Lance weapon but only shakes my tank so it just can't shoot but it can still move.

On my turn I move my Crisis suits within 12" of his Wave Serpent so Shas'O can use his Fusion Blaster. I then move my Devilfish right up against his Farseer and Wave Serpent so the rear hatch of the Devilfish would open in that 2" space and disembark my Firewarriors, so now his Gaurdians can't get out. My Crisis Suits blow up his Wave Serpent killing all inside it while my Firewarriors send a hail of plasma fire into his Farseer killing it.

The remaining turns were spent getting my suits in range of his Rangers to kill them (Which by the way he stupidly moved out of cover )

So there you have it. The details of my epic first win ever!

Don't you have to have two troop choices according to force organization chart? or did they let it slide cause you didn't have models or something?

Maybe he's counting the transport as a Troops choice.

no we are part of an escallation league where every month we increase the battle by 250 pts. The Transport is part of the Firewarrior unit. We decided that you must have your HQ and 2 troops in order to have any Heavy support or Elites on the table

Ah, okay, makes sense. You just had two Force Organization Chart choices.

Make the bodyguards fireknives, with multi trackers. That's best for shooting out people at long range with good stat weapons. Also the carbines should be rifles.

Then whatever got locked in CC dies, just like any Tau unit that gets assaulted by any race's assault troops. What is your point?

What do carbines have to do with CC? You don't think you're actually going to pin anything with them, do you? All Eldar assault troops are Ld. 9-10, and even Guardians are Ld 8. The odds are against you. You'd be better off with the extra rapid fire shot than trying for pinning.

Post less, think more.

my reason for the Carbines is because i'm part of a LEAGUE which means i'm also fighting other armies with crappy leaderships. I'm sorry what did you say about posting less and thinking more?

For you, I'd suggest "post less, read more." Obviously my previous post was directed at FishMonk and his practically content-free blatherings, not you. Did you not notice the three posts before it?

By the way, what are these "armies with crappy leaderships"? Guard? Not with proper use of bubbles and doctrines. Marines of any kind? Nope. Dark Eldar? Nope. Nids? Ha.

Mob rule.

I don't tool my army to fight morons. I don't see why the OP should, either.

Yea, Pinning is sadly a largely unusuable mechanic until 5th comes out. I can't even get Tau to be pinned. The real trouble comes from the fact that almost everything that wants to assault you has a really high leadership, as t-C said, so you really can't do much that is exciting with it.
The only pinning weapons the Tau guys I play against end up using as the sniper drones due to their "Pow, headshot!" powers against power armor. Lots of pow, very little armor.
I am really looking forward to the new pinning though. I like the idea of more psychology effects in the game, and I have two cool counts as Vindicare collecting dust currently that I would like to use without thinking "man, that was a lot of points poorly spent."

okay perhaps "crappy leadership" was the wrong term to use. I still get 18 out of 20 shots at best with a small chance of pinning but it's still there.

Yes, it's there, but with only two carbines in the squad, the odds are even lower than one might think, since at least one of the carbines needs to make a kill before you can even inflict the pin test. That's one of the perennial problems of carbines, IMO: where do you find the right balance between sheer killing power and the likelihood of a carbine kill? Every carbine increases your chances of inflicting a pin test, but decreases your overall lethality. Given the low odds of pinning even if you do inflict the check, I'm not convinced it's worth doing at all.

well this is also my first time ever playing Warhammer 40k and it's worth having them in there if for no other reason then to learn how they work. I do thank you for the advice though of there general lack of usefulness

I think if they made carbines assault two, then maybe they'd be worth using against markerlighted targets.....maybe

Speaking of which, what is your plan with the transported firewarrior squad leader having a markerlight? It isn't likely that he'll use it much. Just filling points? In any case, as far as equipping your doodz(firewarriors), I'd would go for as much firepower as possible. All rifles. You may actually kill enough to force a casualty test.

If carbines were assault 2, they'd be too good for FoF.

The markerlight is for the Seeker Missile on the Devilfish. I would need a networked markerlight to benefit the squad itself.
