Greetings all, I would like to do a themed space marine list - something different than most but still somewhat competitive. My theme will be missile launchers and I am trying to get as many as possible in a 1500 point list. Here is what I have come up with:

HQ Captain w/PF
75pts.

Elite(trait that allows devs in elite slot)
5 man 4 ML w/Tank Hunters
x3 = 510pts.

Troops
5 man 1 ML
x6 = 510pts.

Heavy Support ( devies )
5 man 3 ML
x3 = 405

So I have 61 space marines & 27 MLs for 12 units. I know they are small units but hey they are space marines! This is for fun I know I will a problems trying to get objectives and things of that sort but my focus again is to get as many MLs as possible, I dont physically have 27 missile launchers yet but am working on it! Thoughts on how I can shuffle the points around to fit more in the list, or comments would be great!

It's got a heavy theme, and nobody will expect it.

Hope you don't see a terminator army...

Would that be a good counter to it? If so how would it play out? That is why do I not want to see a terminator army, what would they do to this list?

i see the need for at least a couple of plasmaguns in this list. other than that pray for no uberfexes, and no termies

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

this is like the time my brother once told me his "theme" for his space wolf army was power fists and plasma guns. It was a cool army, by the by.

You can always use the blasts against termies. If bolters do fine against termies I don't know why S4 blasts wouldn't do the same.

One thing I would suggest is don't skimp on the HQ, you probably want some choppy. Maybe get rid of two tac squads, add plasma guns to the other four and bump all the squads up to 6 man.

But it's a definate cool army and I like it better theme-wise than the ML/ HB one list. All those Missile launchers are just so much more win.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but your main failing is your AP. Krak missiles bounce off Terminators and Carapaced Fexes more often than not. Still, it's an interesting army - with that many missile launchers it'd be interesting to see how much of a mess you'd make of big infantry units with massed frag barrages.

I am somewhat new to the rules, so the strength of the weapon has to be MORE than twice the toughness of the target? So a S9 would instantly kill a T4 target but S8 would not?

No, S8 insta-kills T4 and S6 insta-kills T3.

So wouldn't a S8 ML instantly kill a T4 terminator then?

A terminator has 1 wound. Therefore instant killing it means nothing - only models with more than 1 wound are affected by instant death. Terminators still gets their 2+ save against your krak shots, and you dont have that many to go around.

yea but he still gets an armor save. the only things that deny armor saves are the AP (has to be equal to or less than the targets armor value), power weapons, and anything else that has rules saying does not get armor saves against.

Thanks for the clarification! Well terminators will be the challenge. All this talk of low AP weapons has my thoughts turning to plasma, now if we talking plasma way not a list with ALL plasma! I could have tank hunting plasma cannons after all! But that is a different matter. Thanks again.

Maybe because you should never get more than one full and one partial unless the Termeis just DSed? You'd be better off firing krak.

Seems like a very nice list. The Tank Hunters gives the Elite/Devs an effective S9 against vehicles(As good as a Las-Cannon-yum!).

Mind you, with squads that size, be ready for some wasted points in 'Running like Wusses'. 25% shooting or H2H aren't much in your favour with 5/6 man squads and Ld tests. You'll fail at least 1 a game(at least!0 which negates any Bono's to Hvy weapons on thier next turn.

Dunno, seems nice, but I am a 10 Man squad kind of player.

50pts for five plasmaguns in your Troops. Dropping a single 5 man ML squad would get you 85pts. You could spend the other 35 upgrading your HQ with a jump pack and a plasma pistol (IIR the points values C) for more effective counterassault ability.

I'd played against a similar list in a tournament.
He had about 24 missile launchers in 1500 pts.
Nevertheless he lost against my mech Eldar army.
He had 1 squad intact while I had more than half of the army intact.
If there is terrain on the board, a fast enemy army can avoid part of the ml's,
and this what happened to him.
