Bit of an annoyance, more than anything else. I noticed that if I read a post, and then post a reply, it counts the post as a "new post" that I haven't read yet on the forum. If I just posted, that means I read it. I want to be notified of new posts by someone OTHER than myself.

I also noticed that if I click on the "read latest reply" it goes to the beginning of the thread, not the final post.

Other than that, love the new dakka functionality.

Yup that was the first thing I noticed too, and no idea how we missed it in testing. It will be fixed by next weekend.

Been trying to duplicate the 2nd issue I noted. Can't duplicate it. So that might not be an issue.

Kudos on the latest release.

I really like it, but is there a way to make it so when I close my browser all the threads are set to read anyway? lol I depend on that. Yes, it's just an extra click but it was so handy just closing then opening the browers again. Like a setting we can change to the default behaviour?

We will probably implement that in the future, but it is only you really heavy users that benefit from it so it is not at the top of the list of things to add (which is still a looong list). For now, I am afraid it is the extra 'mark all as read' click (but at least that way it gives you a bit more control).

The 'skip to the first unread' hiccup was probably just because all read dates have been reset, so from now on it will be fine, but the first couple of times you read a post, it will skip to the first unread where the first unread will be the first post. Basically it will fix itself in a day or two

Actually I think it will drive users away.

I can't think of any other boards I've ever used where I had to click a button instead of just coming back later to see new posts.

From convenient to pain to use?

Not sure how being a heavy user matters since this affects everyone negatively.

Tacobake, it is firefox compatible as that is pretty much all that was used to develop it. The problem you are seeing is that your cache has not updated yet. Hit shift and refresh at the same time to get the latest stylesheet (might be ctrl-refresh I can never remember).

Country flags are done by IP and are about 99.9% accurate. People who use ISPs that share IPs across countries (like AOL) will sometimes have the wrong flag, as will people using US govt ISPs (like military users in other countries). They are meant as a general guideline for mods to smackdown bad english, and are not set in stone. They are set for each individual post rather than for the poster in general.

Stelek, I think you misunderstand... you dont have to click a button to see new posts... after 14 days any unread posts will be automatically marked 'read', any new posts will always be marked as read. Most other forums dont offer that much read tracking but due to the large number of casual users that we want to make a bit more chatty, we made it go that far back (most forums are 7 days max). As mentioned before, all posts are marked 'read' as a one-off temporary thing from switching to the new read-tracking software, so just click 'mark all read' this once, and then all future posts will be flagged as 'New' only if they are really new. New posts will always be highlighted as 'New Posts' and you can also browse by using the 'Recent Threads' link to make sure you only see the latest posts if you have a large number of unread 'New' posts that you never want to read, but cant be bothered clicking 'mark all posts read'. We will be adding session-based read tracking again but have to basically re-implement it due to the big change in the underlying system to support the new read tracking code, so it will take a couple of months to get round to doing it. I assure you that you will like it in the future, it is just slightly different so will take a couple of days to get used to the logic behind it

Oh man just reading all that on a sunday made my brain hurt.

I meant it's a pain in the ass to have to click 'mark as read' every time I visit, and then close my browser just so I can see if there are new replies in specific forums. i.e. it's nice for there to be a global setting, but without being able to turn it off it ruins the way I (and I'm pretty sure, others) use dakka. I don't really want to have to make multiple links to only certain forums and track new messages manually.

That's so....1987.

I guess I'm confused by the thread subscribed to thing still.

It shows all these threads that I'm 'subscribed' to, as if it was showing my intentional interest in a thread.

"Forum Index » Profile for Stelek » Threads Subscribed to by Stelek"

I looked through the list, and 95% of those threads I really could give a crap about.

So, while it still seems to be just me that thinks 'subscribed' means I actually clicked a 'subscribe' button and am closely watching with interest said thread...that's the furthest thing from the truth.

What's the point of those again? Will there be a point at uhh some point? lol

Oh and 'hottest threads' also seems a misnomer.

How are these tracked? By number of posts but not sorted in the resulting list by last post?

Also there's a ton of locked threads...isn't that kind of pointless?

In the 'editing articles tutorial' it says under 'organizing your writing':

"If you use headings, you can put a table of contents into your article with the following special word:"

There then appears a nice TOC. The actual word only shows up on the right hand side in small letters.

Might want to fix that. lol

That is as it should be, the left hand side shows the literal interpretation by the software, the right hand side shows the code you need to type it out.

These have not been changed since this forum software launched. There is an algorithm that applies different weights to threads and figures out the best by views/replies/etc.

Any thread you click 'subscribe' to will be put in the list. Any time you post in a thread, it will go into the 'subscribed threads' page automatically to help you track replies to yourself.

I think you are still misunderstanding how the read tracking works. Aside from the bug where your own replies get marked as unread, it is all pretty standard. Take a few days to play with it and it should all become clearer.

When I add someone to my ignore list, can the board automatically generate an e-mail and send it to them? Something along the lines of "Jomi now ignores you, you jerk"

Feel free to bug me to find bugs. I'm not a IE user, I use Firefox.

So how do I 'unsubscribe' from threads (I don't ever keep track of thread replies in this way) so I can actually show threads I'm interested in...or want to keep track of myself instead of having the system do it for me?

No computer can use a algorithm and figure out what I want ya know. I still get ads on googlesites for firefox downloads...5 years later. lol

Your ignore list is actually a total secret... not even mods and admins can see your ignore list in an attempt to try and keep everyone calm and happy. I think we get enough flamewars as it is

You can unsubscribe from threads in two ways right now. I am going to make it much nicer and cleaner in the future (and in the medium-term I'll add an option to disable auto-subscribe on posting in a thread). For now you can either go to a thread and then click 'Unsubscribe' which can be found at the bottom of the thread page, or go to the old subscriptions page which has a 'Delete' button. I dont have the direct URL to hand but if you cant wait I can get it to you tomorrow. If you can wait, it will be coming in the next few weeks hopefully (assuming no big bugs creep up).

I'm pretty sure I do understand how the forum read system works. I'll try and explain why I don't like it with a before and after view.

Before:

I visit dakka, the forums I usually read have nothing new in them, look at the other stuff and see if there's anything I want to look at...if not, close the browser.

Rinse and repeat.

After:

I visit dakka, the forums I usually read have nothing new in them, look at the other stuff and see if there's anything I want to look at...if not, close the browser.

Oops, forgot to 'click' mark all threads read.

Open browser, click the link...close browser.

===============

This is not default behaviour on any other web sites forums, and I visit alot of them.

Why is it default now?

I know I wanted a mark all threads as read button, but I didn't want to have to keep clicking the damn thing.

Reload, oops there's some new stuff...but nothing I care about...click mark as read.

Rinse and repeat. :(

This is not a good thing. I know you probably worked your ass off to get this to work, but I don't want to have to click the damn thing.

You think casual users will like this? They visit once a day or week, so don't they have to go into every forum and look at every thread to actually see what's new? Why does it help casual users?

The behaviour should be (IMO) like this:

Visit, everything gets marked as read when you close your browser. If you are a heavy user, the 'mark all threads read' is a useful tool so you can pull up threads you want to reply to then 'nuke' all the 'unread' threads you don't care to (i.e. what I do is open new forums and then new subthreads in new tabs...and then when I'm done I have to close all of my browsers to get everything marked as 'read'.)

It should be an option not a requirement. i.e. Sometimes doing it will be nice, so I don't have to close all my browser windows (like, so I can keep my internet radio going). Most of the time though, I'd rather just close the browser I was using for a quick peek and seeing nothing new of interest...just close it and come back later when I had another free minute.

I can't be the only person this is annoying to. lol

Question on the ignore list:

If you ignore a mod or admin, can they post through the ignore?

No, not going to myself I'm just wondering if you've set it up so they cannot be 'ignored' even if they are. lol might want to if people can ignore mods...they might not get important messages like 'hey shut up already'.

And Legoburner, out of curiosity. What happens if I click "ignore" on my posts? As in the ones I posted? I don't wanna try it and get sent to purgatory on accident.

Clicking on "articles" in the menu bar takes me to the right section, but I'm not logged in there. Different login/cookie combo?

(Edit/Addendum) Couple things:

1) Right this moment (edit post window), I have an ebay ad flashing away across the top of my screen. Ewww. *edit 2: actually, I have ads across all the forums as well.

2) Also, mousing over a subject line in a post turns it red, but doesn't seem to do anything. Is there supposed to be some functionality there?
