Subject: Last played 3rd Ed, getting back into the game. Should I stick with 3rd or is 4th Ed. better?

Well my lenghty title says it all but I'll repeat it. I used to play 40k during 2nd & 3rd Ed but got out of the game just as 4th Ed came out. I'm thinking of getting back into the game but I'm wondering what your guys thoughts are on the change in the rules from 3rd to 4th. What are the things you think they really got right with 4th and what do you think they messed up in 4th? Do any of you guys play 3rd over 4th? I dont have any of my old stuff so saving money playing with my old stuff isnt a consideration.
Thanks for any responses. I look forward to your thoughts.

I'd say wait the 3 month or so and get in on the ground floor of 5th edition.

Sure are. There's a 20 something page thread in the News forum about 5th edition rumors and such.
Have fun.

you also uhm... shouldn't go google searching for the leaked early beta of the 5th edition rules.
You can if you want to, but it's stealing, and it's wrong.

For the time being, I would just read someone's rules and get familiar with it, and then if you have questions you can just ask people while you're playing. As was said, you won't be playing it long anyhow, fifth is coming out soon

in other angle, you could play 4th but tone down the transport rules a bit. Say replace every mention of "entangle" with "pinning".

Yeah, I'd stick with 3rd until 5th comes out. 4th was, in my opinion, an improvement, but not a huge one. The rulebook looked very nice, though, I thought! Good art, good layout, nice pictures, etc.

Play Orks. Your Codex will be good for the next 9 years.
At least.

5th is likely to be as full of BS as every other edition of 40k. Go for a decent sci-fi game like AT-43 or something and save yourself a load of grief

QFT.
I'm actually tempted to just go back to 3rd ed. (sans codicies, just what's in the BBB). Sure, it had it's problems, but the game was complete, and it's not changing ever again!
But as many said, wait for 5th ed. before you dive back in (though Kill Team and Combat Patrol are worth a look-see).

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil |

Or you could do Space Wolves. They're STILL on their original codex.

If you play 3rd edition right out of the rule book (and don't use any of the codexes), I think you'll have a lot of fun and you can keep that up till 5th edition comes out. 4th has been an improvement over 3rd. Some things were nerfed quite a bit and others suped up in standard GW pendulem style, but all in all, it's a better game than 3rd was.
