This is quite similar to what I was planning on doing.
Angron maybe you might try this instead:
Toss one hero and one vargulf at each unit.
This gives you 4 attacks from the lord + 3 from his mount, followed by the 5 from the vargulf. 9 attacks that hit on 3+, 4 are at -3 and 5 at -2. Then 3 hit on 4+ (or 3+ vs WS3 troops) and are at -2. This will also prevent people from running away from your Vargulfs since they only move 16". The 20" flight should let you autokill anyone tries to run away.
The second unit gets 3 attacks from mannfred, 3 from his mount, and 5 from the vargulf. So 3 at 3+ @ -2, 3 @ 4+ (or 3+ vs WS3) and 5 at 3+ @ -2.
First unit goes into 4+ save troops, and second unit goes into 5+ save troops.
You do know red fury + great weapon is not allowed, right? You also know Great Weapons are only +1
str when mounted, right?
Anyway while Mannfred is really good and I haven't found a way to replace him yet (not sure I will), you might want to swap your Vampire Lord to this combination:
Red Fury, Infinite Hatred, Sword of Might, Walking Death.
Sword of Might gives you +1
Str, is not a great weapon.
Infinite Hatred means you re-roll all your rolls to hit, every round...including those caused by Red Fury.
So you'll be WS7 S6 with re-rolls to hit and all wounds that are unsaved will be more attacks. Most of your attacks should hit, if not all of them. This can generate +8 wounds.
I plan on running a lord with the above, and a vampire on a hellsteed with:
Balefire Lance, Infinite Hatred, Walking Death. Edit: Forgot, the Lance gives you the boom-boom you need vs Treemen.
Again, 3 attacks most of which should hit and as the lance gives me S7 I should be able to wound again.
The lord will go by himself.
The vampire and the 2 vargulfs will go off into a second unit.
Automatically against a full +5 unit, I'm down to +4 because of waking death.
The Lord should be able to generate +7 or +8 by himself, and the abyssal terror should increase that by +1 or +2.
Winning by 4-6 routinely seems like a good deal.
The vampire should get +5 to +6, +0 from his mount, and the vargulfs should get +3 to +5. Again, easy to win with these combos against most units. Even if they do stay, only the vampire really loses any effectiveness but that's acceptable given the Vargulfs standing there with him.
Just some food for thought.
