Hello there, I'm an aspiring 40k player-to-be and was looking into building an army. I read the rules and a few codexes, and I must say I like the nids. Yes, I played Zerg in SC *takes cover*

Looking at IG's codex, since my best friend plays them(might as well know what I'd be up against most of the time) I was pretty confused seeing possible meltaguns and lascannons and whatnots with AP 2 everywhere.

I get a huge kick out of creating and customizing characters, I remember once spending 40hours on a D&D char I never played. So buildings nids seems like a lot of fun, and tyrants and fexes are very customizable.

And slow.

After reading IG's codex and seeing formation of heavy gunners in nearly every squad I read, I'm starting to wonder of the validity of fexes on the battlefield. They are cool, but are they worth it? I mean, 150pts of rippers or gaunts seems to be a very good alternative.

I've seen fexes that could do 6 to 10 attacks with rerolls on both hits and wounds that seemed very nice, but I just wonder if they'll ever move more than 6inches before being focus fired to death.

Am I paranoid? Anyone can enlighten me about the things and how to use them?

I apologise if it'S been beaten to death, probably has too.

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?
yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!

I'll go ahead and say right now I do disagree with him on giving fexes a 2+ save. If all my opponents ever had was lascannons and plasma guns, the swarm portion of my army would eat him alive and I'd win anyway.

But the thing is, so much more than lascannons and plasma gets thrown at fexes. You're going to have a crapton of heavy bolters firing at you in any given game, and in a normal game against someone who tried to prepare himself for a balanced tyranid army you'll be dealing with krak missiles, las/plas combos, heavy bolters and assault cannons. Against many other opponents you'll have to deal with a lot of weaponry that you'll get a normal save against that wounds you on a 4 or less. It is for this reason that I tend to go for the 2+ save instead of the extra wound.

Now, if I was a fan of the godzilla list with 8 monsters in front of genestealers, I'd probably go for the extra wound first. Otherwise, I feel they just need that 2+ save to stay alive, or at least convince people to waste more shots on them. After all, a tyranid player may not necessarily care whether or not a fex dies, but you can bet that space marine player does not want his predator to go up in smoke.

Don't flame me, bro!
