So I finally got enough stealers to try it, here's my first attempt:

Broodlord +S +Sv
10 Genestealers +Sv
290

12 Genestealers +Sv, Scuttle
12 Genestealers +Sv, Scuttle
12 Genestealers +Sv, Scuttle
12 Genestealers +Sv, Scuttle
12 Genestealers +Sv, Scuttle
1380

Gunfex Vc/Bs, +B +W
Gunfex Vc/Bs, +B +W
326
Total: 1996

The goal is to get as many stealers on the board as possible. This gives me 70.

I played a game with it Monday, against a Tau uber-HQ unit army, and it got pasted. He just put out too much AP4+ firepower for the stealers to handle, and I couldn't reach most of his units cuz of the damn jump-shoot-jump thing.

Anyone else make a similar army? Anything I can change to make it better?

Stealers lists are win big lose big lists.

There's nothing much you can do to change this.

I play a stealer shock army. I am a bit suprized you could not take the tau. Where you spreading out to avoid his plates? What was the cover like? Why could you not get to his JsJ troops?

A scuttle stealer swarm can be within 6" of the enemy board edge on average in 2 turns. 6 scuttle 6 move 3.5 average fleet, 6 move, 3.5 average fleet, 6 assault. + 12 for starting on your scrimage line = 43 inches of a 48 inch board and a few units will do better with good fleet rolls. With good rolls some of you units should definatly have been in hth with his crisis suits by turn 2.

His army list was
1 big HQ unit, lots of suits, with (Tau char with sword) and lots of shield drones - like 7-800 pts
1 small HQ unit with 3 suits and a couple of drones
1 unit of 3 broadside suits with 2 drones
1 crisis suit
2 7 man fire warrior units
1 large stealth suit unit
1 Hammerhead

Basically, he could point at a unit of stealers and they would vanish. The suit's missle launchers and (fusion guns? plasma guns?) dumped a whole ton of accurate shots that didn't give me a save. The fire warriors & stealth suits helped. The board had a decent amount of terrain of on it, but only enough area terrain to hide 1 or two advancing units at the most. He had all of his units in half of his deployment zone, so I had to bunch my troops up as I closed in. I honestly don't see how I could have done much better without better cover.

"Basically, he could point at a unit of stealers and they would vanish."

Yea and?

You should expect to take 50-75% casualties in the 2 turns it takes you to get into your oppoents lines. From what you said you should still have had 3 full squads of stealers when you hit him.

On the other hand I have lost with my stealer army to gun lines in the past.

Try replacing your non fleet brood lord with a wing dakka rant and add another gun fex, break your stealer units down to 8 stealer broods and add another brood of 8. Throw in 3 raveners. These would be the only changes I would make to your list.

That one HQ unit could do that. The other units could almost take another. Some stealers did hit his line and wiped out the firewarriors, but that just gave him time to back his big units away. I took about 80% casualties just getting to his line, and he got another turn of shooting after backing away while the stealers were chewing on his throwaway units.

The gun fexes didn't do much, and I'm not sure I want to add a third one. I think I might add some zoanthropes, but I'd like to test this list out against a few other armies first. I'm not a big fan of the single ravener unit, I've just never seen them do what people say they're capable of. Especially not for 50 pts each.
