since I have quite a few pieces done for my CoD table I've been considering making some more industrialized types of bases. I'm particularly looking for cargo containers that I can base and repaint with aquilas. The problem I'm having is finding the correct model train scale for the 40k setting. I read somewhere on warseer or here a long time ago that N-scale was comparable but upon further research I'm finding it is too small. I have 2 cargo containers from at43 and they are they right size, but I'm trying to hold out in hopes I can find the right size containers for less than $12 USD for just 2.

Anyone have personal experience or knowledge with train scales? I would certainly be in your debt!

Hi there ,

I have done a few industrial type pieces of scenery with railroad tracks and i used "O" gauge Hornby tracks . It seems the closest to the 28mm used in 40k.Did a harbour and parked a few wagons i found in my old train collection, it fits right in . You can find tracks and wagons for next to nothing on eBay .
To talk about trains , i'm thinking about building an armoured train like the russians used in WW2 , lots of turrets ,armour platings and gun ports . For the base of work ,a friend recommended a playmobil train.
Hope it helped,
cheers ,

O Gauge is between 1:43 and 1:64 scale which is about right for 28mm. N Gauge, on the other hand, is 1:160 - definitely too small.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

You can find all kind of tinplate trains with a wide variety of designs , tha main makers were Hornby , Marklin , JEP , Lima , ...
Some of them still do them now in plastic like Lima and marklin ,
Being belgian ,i'm not too familiar with them , but i hear that Lionel (US company) makes a very nice range of accessories of all kinds . All plastic , not too old ,so i guess not too expensive ,

Right behind you...

Cheers Shannon! Yeah, the brands you are used to here in Europe are more uncommon in the States so he might have a tough time finding things like you have in your collection.

I was pretty impressed with the Sunday morning toy market in Woluwe when I stopped by to see Fenris. Seemed like they had almost anything you could possibly want in the model trains hobby. Sadly, I've never seen anything like it in the States (although that doesn't mean they don't exist).

I just checked eBay to find out ,and there are more than 450 listings under Lionel O gauge ,including a few tanks wagons all in plastic (better for conversions)
Seems like a good choice to me if i was living in the US .
This said, I'd never use expensive collectible to make a scenery , there's more than enough junk in O gauge to work with .
