I was making a list for my wolves with drop pods and asked myself if you had to buy drop pods for everyone, or if they just get deep strike rules. Couldnt decide on an answer so i decided I'd ask on here.

A guy in our Club has been playing SW for about ten years. A game came up recently where he was lamenting that I, as a Vanilla Marinez player(Hurr), could just play droppies on whatever squad, wheras he had to have all or none.
Seems pretty harsh to me(as a rule/Trait whatever), but as my entire army deploys via deep-striking drop pods 90% of the time it never really matters to me personally.
I like a lot of features of his army though, Bloodclaws etc-the best by far are the Scouts that can enter via your opps. table edge, wielding plasma-a-plenty lol.
The rule itself is in the SW Codex though, it will take me some time to find out for sure where, sorry.

Drop Pods. Use the rules for Drop Pod Assault on p.21 of Codex: Space Marines. Follow the Codex: Space Wolves list of models that can utilize Drop Pods.
So you are limited in which units can do it, but at least you use the cool current DP rules.
For anyone confused by the now-obsolete “entire army must drop pod” rule, that was just a copy & paste of the 3rd ed Space Marine Drop Pod rules, in which there we NO actual pods; all that happened if you chose to use the DP rules was that you could only take dreads, terminators, and power-armored marines, and the entire army deployed via standard Deep Strike.
It sucked, and no one did it, because you could scatter onto the enemy and die if you tried to deploy close, had no pods to hide behind, had no option for squads with two special weapons, had terminators with useless assault cannons, and got slaughtered as your army came down piecemeal.

I did it, once or twice; it was fun, but no basis for a real tactic. Ironicly, it worked best on a IG army, coming in behind the tanks and stunning/weapon-destroying them before they could pie-plate my densely-packed units to death.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.
But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Once back in III edition I was playing a very cheesy shooty Iron Warriors army for a league final with my Dark Angels. I opted to play a drop pod army and deep striked my entire army. I was able to overrun him and win the game.

"So you are limited in which units can do it, but at least you use the cool current DP rules. " Your not limited, the only thing you can't use are tanks. You could have speeders as well for the space wolves. "It sucked, and no one did it, because you could scatter onto the enemy and die if you tried to deploy close, had no pods to hide behind, had no option for squads with two special weapons, had terminators with useless assault cannons, and got slaughtered as your army came down piecemeal." at least now the wolves can actually use the drop pods and not have to deep strike into death.

Not being allowed to use tanks is a limitation. Whether you consider it a particularly large, small, strong, or weak one is up to you, but it is still a limitation.
|
Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular." |
