Situation. Unit of Nob Bikes T4/5 with painboy has a bikerboss T5/6 attached. The squad takes fire from a las/plas squad and one STR 9 hits wounds and the 4+ cover save is no good. Normally that would mean a dead nob as str 9 instant kills and does not allow FNP. If I am reading my rules correctly I can apply that str 9 wound to the warboss who isn't instant killed and would therefore get a FNP roll. Am I correct in this case?

As long as they have the same armor save, yes.

Yup. If the unit has models with multiple different armor saves (invulnerable are irrelevant) the hit has to be allocated first on a model with the most common save. If the Warboss has the same save, you're able to do it.

The correct answer is:

If you join a Warboss to a Nob squad with FNP, the Nob squad loses FNP until he leaves it.

Please read the main rulebook. It's right there in the special rules. Hasn't changed in years.

No, painboyz don't confer anything to IC's that join his unit since they are not part of it. There's a reason that rule exists.

Here's me and Yak overlooking the second half of the question.

Good catch!

The land of cotton.

Er... the USR "Feel No Pain" in the main rulebook isn't marked with the asterisk that denotes IC's not getting the rule and the unit losing the rule when an IC joins.

Good point, Green Git.

A painboy provides FNP to a unit he is joined to and another IC joined to that same unit is indeed part of that unit (until he leaves it) and would therefore benefit from Feel No Pain, IMO.

Please don't berate me and then quote a ruling that is wrong. The FNP is not a unit effect it's provided by a piece of wargear that effects the entire unit. If it worked the way you claim Mad Doc Grotsnik would be useless now wouldn't he.

I've never seen FNP get passed to an IC.

Very interesting! Thanks everyone for illuminating my ignorance on this subject! Especially since I expect to face Orks at Adepticon.

In an attempt to throw a monkey wrench into the situation...

How does the fact that there are different toughnesses in the unit play out? I know you roll to wound on the majority toughness (4/5 in this case) but I was under the impression that you also had to assign wounds to the models that actually had the majority toughness first (or I could just be confusing this with mixed armor save rules).

I don't know offhand. 40k's rules tend to breakdown if you include C in A + B. lol

Yep. There's no mandatory allocation due to mixed toughness, only mixed armor saves.
