Can a hero/lord riding a horse or similar mount, join a unit of infantry, or must they join a like unit? The rules don't seem to say, so I'm inclined to think they can.

Thanks

I thought there was something saying that a cavalry unit needs to be joined by a cavalry hero, and vice versa.

That's what I'm hoping to find. I have no preference one way or the other. I just want to do it right.

Pretty certain that in the current edition a hero on mount can join infantry or cav or "big" infantry (40mm bases) or even war machine crew as they see fit. Only skirmishers - and flying units - can't be joined by mounted heroes, IIRC.

Now we need Manny / Fell / other smart rulesfolk to back me up.

No, you're right, I checked the BRB, and indeed, characters can join units of infantry when mounted or vice versa. Interesting... :p

Exactly. Monsters and Units of Flyers can't be joined by anyone, and IIRC Skirmishers can only be joined by characters on foot. And a character on a flying mount can't join anyone. Other than that you're pretty much golden.

In 6th edition a character who was significantly larger (20mm was considered equivalent to 25mm, but anything bigger was bigger) than the unit he was attached to could be singled out for targeting. Which meant a guy on a horse in a unit of infantry got his butt shot/magicked/cannonballed off a lot. They removed this in 7th, which allows for a character on a horse to now act as a more visually-dramatic addition to an infantry unit, and gives him more protection (+1 save for a mount, +1 more if barded) and mobility if he wants to move out.

I'd like to come back on that: the BRB says flying monsters can't join units...UNLESS they're ridden by a character.

Right, that was the only reference I saw to character/unit combos.

Plus he helps fill out a second rank.

Thanks for the input guys.
