I'm thinking about getting into Fantasy, and I'm looking to figure out a fairly cost effective (as in $-to-points) army that is still fairly competative. Brets and Lizardmen are the two I'm leaning toward, so I'm particularily interested in how cost effective these two are. But I'd also like a general idea for all armies. Can anyone give me some idea?

Ogres are hte most cost effective army out there.
Brets are next in line.

He did say "still fairly competitive" ... :S

Balancing cheap + effective I'd say, in order: Brets, Ogres, Vamps. I've made some pretty mean vamp builds that wouldn't clock in too high on the $$$ scale. Then again, there are all those 'free' zombies to buy if that's your thing

I would actually guess Dwarves to be extremely cost effective, given the Battle for Skull Pass set. Get 2-3 sets of those, and you don't have to add much else.

Lizards won't be extremely cost-effective, while remaining competitive - you need a lot of models. Brets are good. The Tzeentch flying circus is a little pricey, owing to the number of chariots involved (and may not be valid long, given the pending revision of the Hordes of Chaos book).

Both Brets and Lizardmen have a good selection of plastics to work with, so that indeed makes the relatively cost effective. Both have all the core troops covered nicely with the kits and if you buy a battalion box for either, you'll get some savings and a good base for the army (altough it has to be said that in a really competetive list, you won't necessarily use men-at-arms and so many sauruses who come in them boxes). One problem with lizzies is that they have very nice selection of special and rare choices but the figs are mostly metal so they might cost a bit more. The Bretts don't suffer from this too much, as their special and rare knights can be converted from normal knights so you don't necessarily have to buy the metal models.

In the end, though, both can be made relatively low-count, cheapish armies with a large amount of plastic models (easier with Bretts). If you like the models/theme/visuals/fluff of either army more, pick that.

The game store I visit is rather nice.

There, "out of print" figures for WHFB are half price. I bought lots of elector counts and such.

A few years back, I loaded up havily on plaguebearers and nurglings with the intention of building an army around Typhus. Since I got into FB, I have the makings of a pretty good chaos army, whenever I get to building. The prices were low to begin with, and they were halved.

It was also kind of nice to get the command group for the Cursed Company for $5.00.

Ogre Kingdoms - Buy 2 Battalions and a Tyrant model. Convert 3 Butchers from the Bulls in the battallion and you have a 2000 point army.

1 Tyrant
3 Butchers
6 Iron Guts ( 2 units of 3 with musician from bulls)
7 Bulls
8 Lead Belchers (Or Bulls if you want)
96 Gnoblars (Convert some to trappers)

The Metal Butcher is FUGLY. Seriously, it's the only GW model I ever plunked $35 for and then refused to field it becuase of how FUGLY it is.

If you really enjoy modelling, you could convert bulls into ManEaters. Maneaters are pure awesome.
