So, I had my first experience with dipping tonight (some Soviets for FOW) and I was wondering what I should do about varnishing.

Obviously I want to kill the shine from the satin dip, so that's going to take some matte varnish. My question is, should I hit them with a coat of gloss for extra protection before I hit them with the matte (that's what I usually do - gloss coat for better protection and matte coat to kill the shine) or will the polyurethane dip be enough protection to skip the gloss coat?

Thanks homies,

-Hordini

If you used the minwax polyshades, you really don't have to bother with a second layer of gloss. When dry the minwax makes them nigh bulletbroof. or at least 3 foot fall off the table-proof. Everybody swears by testors dullcote to take the shine off, but pretty I'm sure your favorite matte sealant will work fine.

Agreed, most floor varnish based dips are fine with just a matt varnish.
Another gloss won't help all that much.

Thanks bros, I'll be hitting these with some Testors Dullcote then. Glad to hear the Minwax Polyshade makes them so durable, because that's what I used. It was the Antique Walnut color.

Pics coming soon!
