I've been looking at both Warmachine and Hordes for awhile now, but I cannot for the life of me find what each faction really focuses on. Everyone has a different opinion, and I can't seem to find a faction that really appeals to me.
Thus, can someone post a quick "summary" of some of the factions and what they generally excel in?
Personally, however, I'm seeking a faction with rather obscure, complex tactics that focuses on both speed and defense with a large amount of generalists. I tend to dislike one trick ponies.

You should take a look at my previous thread, as I just started WM and I got a lot of great responses on the game systems of both and some army breakdowns too:

But one thing that sticks out in my mind is that the Cryx sound like the faction that focuses on Speed and Defense.

As far as Warmachine I would say pick the faction that most visibly appeals to you. I say this because all the factions can do what the others can to a great extent because of all the units/jacks available thru the various expansion put out and with Legends coming up even more so. I have seen all four go shooty and assault based on the casters and units used. As a general rule tho' Cygnar shooty, Kador brutal hand to hand and tough, Cryx assasination and dirty tricks, Protectorate synergy both offensively and defensively.

Learning curve from easiest to hardest I would go Khador+Cygnar, Cryx+Protectorate. Easiest being a misnomer because Prot+Cryx have lots of tricks and synergy models that work off each other that you have to memorize.

I had skimmed over your thread, but after you mentioned it, I really sat down a read it. It does have quite a few of my questions answered in it. Thanks mate.
I need to pick up the rulebook, but it would seem that Man-O-Wars from the Khador faction are faster than their Warjacks. Would it be possible to have a Khador army consisting of a large amount of Man-O-Wars instead of Widowmakers/Warjacks and the like? I like how Khador seems to have a fondness for armor but I hate their ponderous pace. I've always thought of 'bots as line breakers and the troops as the wedge you thrust into those holes.

Not quite true. Manowars are SPD 4 as are most of their
Warjacks. However, you have to spend focus to make the
Warjacks run or charge (with a few exceptions) and
Manowars only need an order to do that.
IFP would make for a good wedge, and the warjack usage
would depend on what types of warjacks you picked. You'd
use a Spriggan or Kodiak for a line breaker, and a
Devastator to be a wedge.

Thanks again mate, I'll be picking up a rule book today.
I'm thinking of making a Man-O-War Khador army with a nice smattering of Winter Guard support cannons and Widowmakers.

Irusk would be a good caster then for your choices and his spell list.

Ok, the Man-O-Wars army is a very viable force in Warmachine, but if you're looking for something fast on the table, they're not it.
There are a number of warcasters that could work very well with this sort of force. Irusk, Sorscha, The Butcher, Vlad or even the Old Witch are nice choices for you.
All are very capable of running a force with either few or no warjacks. You really do have lots of options, so just explore a bit before you commit.
