Buy a trukkload of Boyz. Then, put them on the table. Then, go WAAAAAGGHHH!!! and run them towards the enemy. If you have enough Boyz, you'll beat your enemy.
Basically, buy a Codex, figure out what you need (at least an HQ and 2 troops choices) buy said items, then expand. But in an Ork army, size DOES matter.

There's a really in-depth thread reviewing the new ork codex somewhere in the tactics forum. There's been a lot of talk about it and here's some stuff I've gleaned:
The best units in the codex seem to be ork boyz, stormboyz, and lootas. The ones to avoid are at all costs are grots, flash gitz, and looted wagons.
There are two main army builds:
Ork horde - lots of big units (either 20 or 30 orks) of boyz with as many rokkit launchers as they can carry and a Nob with a power klaw. You probably want to give them shootas so the shear amount of shots they take means some will land and kill your enemies as you slog towards them.
Kult of Speed - lots of small units in transports. You should still take as many orks as possible, on the whole and in each unit. This time the nob should have a powerklaw and a bosspole to keep the boyz from running away when their small numbers get whittled down.
Both builds should have a shooty element that hangs back (lootas, big gunz, or battlewagons with killkannons) and a fast element that runs in ahead of the main army and ties their shooting squads up in combat. Most everybody likes stormboyz but once in a while somebody makes a case for warbikes, kommandos, or deffkoptaz.

Just to give a fair shake to all ork units, I disagree entirely with about half of the unit analysis in that article. Only you can decide which units you like to use, because it depends on your playstyle. Personally I like the Big Mek army of as many walkers as I can take. Though the mass of boys works exceptionally well now too. Personally, I don't think trukkboys have the staying power to make a worthwhile list around, but again that's just me disagreeing with about 75% of the board.

Well as someone from the other end of the table I have a bit of advice from game experience against orkz. If you are playing against a fast army do NOT spread the boys out. Yes you will want to avoid bunching up for the templates that you face but remember if you have one squad of 30 boyz and another beside them when deploying fast moving shooters will flank you. Shootas help to combat somewhat but not as effective against armor.
Basically what I'm getting at is if you never played horde before make sure you understand how to deploy such a large force. Lootas are great but I have sent in a unit to tie boyz in combat to block LOS from lots of lootas until I can reposition myself to take out the lootas. Just a few thoughts to think about when playing them.

yeah at the moment i have the codex 10 boyz with sluggas and choppas, 10 boys with shootas and a nob for each. so i still have a "bit" of work to do.

Remember that right now Boys, Lootas, and Stormboys are in style. Eventually people will change and adapt, and some already have, so popular opinion about what units are good and what units are bad will change.
Something that usually helps in an Ork army is diversity, so you're off to a good start.
