Ok, this came up recently in a game. My unit was charged in the flank by two units, one was 2 knights and the other was a single hero on foot. My opponent claimed that since the two units were US5 combined and therefore negated my flank. The rules seemed to support that it had to be one unit with a US of 5 and not a combined US of 5 so I disputed him. The other gamers we asked agreed with me and therefore he did not negate my rank bonus nor gain the +1 for being on my flank.

What do you think? Was I right or would two units with a combined US5 negate my rank bonus?

You are correct. At least one unit or model must have US 5 in order to negate ranks/get a flank bonus. It's not additive.

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

Now had that hero joined the knights before the charge he would have negated your ranks.

Since you seem to indicate that he didn't Fellblade would be correct.
