I posted two that work really well.
All the answers to your questions are within the recent threads, but I'll give you some easy tips before I go to bed.
The 4 basic army types are:
Warrior horde.
Nightshield mechanized.
WWP.
Mechanized Wych Cult.
If it isn't one of those, odds are you should stay away from it--and of course, those are the armies you want to take.
Warrior horde puts 160 warriors down and encourages you to try and kill them all.
Wych Cult runs into close combat with you, and if you are vulnerable to close combat you lose.
WWP generally 'stacks' an army up, which arrives and alpha strikes you on turn 3 (and you lose).
Nightshield negates alot of shooting at it, and shoots you to death (and you lose).
DE aren't popular because alot of people don't like the figs (especially the basic warrior) and the fluff isn't as compelling as it could be.
They will, however, when properly built and executed, kick most armies asses without much effort.
For example: Alot of players fear the Tyranid Gojira list.
DE? Autowin.
For a new player, a nightshield army is probably expensive. A warrior horde is cheapest. Everything else is in the middle.
You can do what I did, buy a DE army off fee-bay and just add it to my own (or in your case, buy two and combine).
You really can't beat fee-bays prices for DE armies compared to GW's, which laughably will be going up from their already too-high pricing.
Don't forget, it's a distinct possibility that GW will 'ravening hordes' the DE in 5th edition; and drop them off the face of the earth. Kinda like Chaos Dwarfs are.
In short, if you can't get a decent DE army going for a couple hundred bucks (or whatever your limit is for losing money) I wouldn't bother with DE till 5th edition Codex comes out and the DE are still around.
Rumor says the Codex is being worked on, but with GW firing people working on it then restarting work...well, hard to tell what the deal is with the DE right now.
