Ork Boy Hangin' off a Trukk
|
Greetings fellow dakkaites. I am a long long time ork and guard player but i have decided I want somthing a little differant to paint. The Thousand Sons caught my eye and they seemed very interesting. So I have put together a little 1500 point army to paint and play some. I am kind of worried about its effectiveness I am use to having 80-120 figs so this is wildly differant then what I am use to. After reading the forums some it seems that combined marks are the norm and tons of obliteraters. But I wanted 1000 sons army so the mixed marks go agianst that. Will this army just loose all the time in most games or can I play it in pick up games and have a chance? Its one thing to loose but another to always loose. I have not bought any of the figs yet so this is very mutable.

I assume the sorc lord is in terminator armor to fit in with the big unit of terminators once they deepstrike in? Odds are good you will want to keep him separate, so he can fire at different targets than they do. That said, his wargear puts him all over the place. I don't see Bolt of change, Doombolt, and the combi-melta working well together. Drop the melta at least, and probably one of his psychic powers. Just because he can have lots of stuff doesn't mean he should.
Rhinos are rolling coffins, especially when you only have two. Drop these as well, pick up another obliterator. Or give your prince warptime or a mark. Or both. You could also beef up those Ksons troop numbers to make them last longer while marching up the field.
Some other things to consider: drop the personal icons from all units, and start the termies on the board. This will at least give your opponent more things to shoot at, and will keep your ksons troops alive. Large terminator squads make juicy targets.
I'd be more help if I wasn't at work, but hopefully this will get you in the right direction.

drop the rhinos for the thousand sons. Their strength is going to be just slogging and shooting. No need to waste time getting in or out (or getting shot out) of the rhino. Put the points elsewhere.
the terminators look good in number and config, though I don't think you're going to need the champ in that squad. Also, 99.9% of the time I would make sure you keep these guys on the board as opposed to deepstriking. you'll want their firepower from turn 1 onwards.
Obliterators are *obli*gatory (someone kill me before I pun again!)...so much so that you want to squeeze another one in. get four obliterators split into two squads for extra long range kick.
I would change the aspiring sorcerors to doombolt, as having the BoC puts them cross-purpose with their squad (anti-tnk in an anti-infantry squad)
I would look at swapping your hq sorceror for another demon prince. Give both warptime, and you have some sick CC ability. The demon princes will get shot at a lot, but they can absorb good amounts of fire, fire that will be diverted from your thousand sons/terms/obliterators, letting you pour it onto squads.

Agreed. You touched on some things I missed, especially how Ksons are best for just slogging forward while still firing at max range.
Obligatorators?

very good advice if i free the icons, remove doom bolt from the sorc, change the other sorcerers to doom bolt and remove the rhinos that will give me 125 points.
That could be a oblit and somthing or it could be a big deamon. Other thoughts for those points?

Put warptime on your daemon prince, drop the sorc lord and take a second warptime prince instead. Change that champion in the terminators to a regular terminator. With points left over, you might have enough for another Oblit. Then you'll have decent firepower and good counterassault.

Hmm the only thing I would not want to do is get rid of the sorcerer but only for fluff reasons. I will work up a slightly differant list and post it today. Maybe I can make some improvements. K0v and gamefiend you have been very helpful.

Hey, thought I might offer a dissenting opinion.
Keep the Rhinos - you don't have to put the Thousand Suns squads in them, and they can be used to block incoming fire, provide the occasional tank shock, and generally make themselves useful.
Don't go overboard on the Obliterators. Some people say they're obligatory, but they aren't. They're actually more vulnerable than Havocs, and will get eaten alive by Lascannons and the like. By all means take some, but just remember that you can get two Terminators for the price of a single Obliterator (or five more Marines).

Split the terminators into 2 squads of 5, and find a way to add another obliterator to get 2 squads of 2. If you can't do that, split the obliterators up into squads of 1. That doubles your scoring units without changing your list around at all, and allows the oblits to shoot at separate targets.
