Field of Glory has an instant win game. Some of the prizes include free miniatures for "life." What it really means is one of every release for the next five years, but hey, who's counting, right?

Also chances to win boxed sets (you know, the new ones filled with plastic 28mm Romans or Gauls from Wargames Factory), Osprey books, etc.

The whole "instant win" thing seems kind of hokey to me, but the chance of winning something cool keeps me coming back.

Field of Glory is the new Ancients historical ruleset from Osprey, by the way.

Seeing as there are only two choices when you get to the site, I would have expected a better win/loss ratio. I've been playing every day for three weeks, and all I've got is one lot of free shipping.

I at least want to see a dead elephant when I win/lose.

Me too...

Although I've read about some people winning other stuff on Slitherine's forum.

Reviewed here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/208431.page with pro and anti views.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

What did you think about the anti-views, Killkrazy?

And are you krazy enough to write it up as an article? Well,
are you?

>>What did you think about the anti-views, Killkrazy?

Well... I'm not convinced the anti-views are all correct.

For example, Parthians are blamed for wrecking smaller armies by using hordes of light skirmisher cavalry -- this is what they did historically (and so did the Mongols 1,000 years later.)

Likewise, ancient Greek hoplite armies started to come unstuck when faced against armies containing a mix of hoplites and light peltasts who worked round the flanks.

DBA (if you are not familiar with it) has all armies consisting of 12 bases -- the composition of each army can vary wildly and there are no points values. This means you can never just outnumber the other side.

Even so DBA can be unbalanced depending on your army and what you face. Blades is the best troop type in most circumstances. A mostly Blades army will usually trash an Auxilia army unless the battlefield is very dense in rough terrain.

>>And are you krazy enough to write it up as an article? Well, are you?

Not right now.

I respect Mikeguth's viewpoint and he does have some points about the way games are played.

I ought to play FoG for a while before making any further comments.

I come from the old tradition of WRG Ancients so I am probably biased -- I need to be careful not to let that affect my evaluation of arguments and counter-arguments.

I am also wary when we start to argue about the historical accuracy of a set of rules. It may be impossible to know how ancient battles worked -- the accounts we have are for obvious reasons incomplete, probably biased and only cover a limited number of battles from a relatively limited period.

That's too bad.

I suppose we could just cut and paste your original review.
