So, this is a fairly silly question, but it's a RAW vs RAI and yadda yadda you get the idea.
Also I just started playing Chaos and have read the full codex cover to cover but this just popped into my head and I'm not sure if it has been discussed or if this is mentioned somewhere within the codex.

Mark of Tzeentch allows a sorcerer to take 2 spells and cast 2 spells in turn correct?
It also confers a +1 to their invulnerable save and if they did not have one, then they gain a save of 5+

Now my question is about the Aspiring Sorcerer.
The wording of the Codex is
"The Aspiring Sorcerer must take one of the following powers"
is the general interpretation of this rule :
"[he] must take one AND ONLY ONE of the following powers"?
In a recent twist I could see it being read
"[he] must take AT LEAST one of the following powers"?

I haven't double checked but I believe this is the same wording for a regular sorcerer meaning I CAN take two but I have to have at least one.

I would like to get a consensus as I think it would be really fun AND fluffy as tzeentch manipulate time and the future to have my squads running around with Doombolt AND Warptime and not just Bolt of Change.

If you feel that they are only allowed to take 1 spell why? Doesn't the Mark permit it where the entry doesn't limit it? Also if they are only allowed to take 1 spell does this mean that they only have a 5+ and not a 4+?
Before I get ahead of myself I would love to get some input.
Also I would appreciate any page references.
Cheers
C

He may take more than one.
It does not say that he may take ONLY one.
A (speculated) reason for this is to keep you from buying, say, T-Sons marines, but not giving the Sorc a spell (to make him cheaper).

If you buy two spells, did you also buy one spell? Yes.

Buy more than one & you're good to go.

Hope this helps.

but...you didn't buy one...you bought two...by your logic he could take 'one of these powers' and one from the Farseer's list...'cause hey, he did take 'one of these powers'

actually I am not trying to be an @$$ about this...nor do I really agree if my ruling is correct (KSons are supposed to be sorcerer armies, they should get more powers), but the ruling seems to say just one, even by virtue of MM's logic.

It was pointed out that the Mark of Tzeentch does not in fact all them to TAKE 2 powers only to CAST 2 powers. I have to double check it, but if that is the case then there is the answer. B)

The Mark of Tzeentch does not allow a Sorcerer to take two psychic powers. It only allows the model to use two psychic powers a turn, and only one power that counts as a ranged weapon at that.

The Sorcerer army list entry, under "Options", allows a Sorcerer with a Mark of Tzeentch to choose any additional power to the mandatory power all Sorcerers must take.

The Thousand Suns army list entry under "Character" merely requires the Aspiring Sorcerer to take a power, and does not allow the possibility of additional powers.

So neither the Mark of Tzeentch (p.88) nor the army list entry (p.98) permit more than one psychic power to be taken by the Aspiring Sorcerer. The Aspiring Sorcerer is stipulated to have a 4+ Invulnerable Saving throw, including the bonus from the Mark of Tzeentch (typo'd as "+4"), as indicated under the heading "Special Rules".

Gotcha!
Thanks. I didn't realize it was entry specific I thought the Mark granted the ability to take 2 powers and not the entry.
Sucks!
i would have loved to take Doombolt and Warptime... it would have made the unit reliably shooty and decent in HtH.

As the unit entry for the HQ has nothing to do with the unit entry for the Troop, and falls into the 'obvious, never has, never will' category--seems like a silly question.

Only the HQ's in a Chaos army get two psychic powers.

Only the Chaos Sorceror HQ with a familiar and the Mark of Tzeentch gets to buy three. Most don't know this, but what else is new. Now you do.

That's why the ability was changed during playtesting.

Thousand Sons suck in CC and excel at shooting. You can be even better at shooting, or raise the CC bar a bit--but not both.

Okay.
Without the codex handy, I got the specifics of WHERE it said it mixed up. my bad.

The rest of my post still stands, however, as I said what has already been decided to be correct.

What, the bit about Aspiring Sorcerers being able to take two Psychic Powers because they must take one?

Magical Memories, how do you figure that what you wrote in your post (AS taking two psychic powers) is "what has already been decided to be correct?" Who do you see agreeing with you? I'm not trying to be obnoxious, I'm just confused.

It was from my original post believing that the Mark allowed you to take two powers.
If that was the case then my interpretation would have been correct... but it wasn't and I was mistaken. B)

Nope.
I own that one.
Entirely my fault.
Though it IS in the title AND original post, I totally missed the word "Aspiring" and just based my answer on "Sorcerer" (meaning the HQ unit).

My sentence:
A (speculated) reason for this is to keep you from buying, say, T-Sons marines, but not giving the Sorc a spell (to make him cheaper).

Was an attempt to compare ASPIRING Sorcs to regular Sorcs & showing why they used the word "MUST."
That could have been made clearer, obviously.

Also:

LOL I didn't take it that way. I see what caused your confusion.

I was (still) seeing it as a "Sorc" discussion at that point, not an :Aspiring Sorc" question.
This is what I was referring to:

Nurglitch wrote:The Sorcerer army list entry, under "Options", allows a Sorcerer with a Mark of Tzeentch to choose any additional power to the mandatory power all Sorcerers must take.

Sorry for the confusion I had... and caused.
Back to your regularly scheduled post, now.
