Hi all. I've just loked through the new WD and have a querrie.
Theres a double page spread with a tag line (havn't got it to hand sorry) obviously advertising new 40K later in the year. All the rumours I've seen suggest that the new game is marines vs orks, whereas this piece of art shows marines vs necrons...
Is this just a nice piece of art not actually referring to the new game or is it hinting at something else? Will necrons actually be in the boxed set or in an early expansion, or new army release or just a random picture for advertsing?

Marines vs. Necrons... interesting... Hard to decide whether Necrons or Orks would be more popular among the little kiddies getting into the game; they looove robots that get back up from the dead and shoot green lazers with green glowy-eyes, but Orks are pure badass... hrmmmm....
I for one don't mind either ^^

Marines verses Necrons actually make some sense for a starter army. Necrons are possibly the easiest army to paint and generally easy to assemble. With the exception of the Lord you can already do a decent little army in plastic (Necrons, Scarebs and the cavalry guys whose name I have gone blank on)
On the other hand, and speaking as a fan of the Necrons, they are a bit boring and perhaps not the easiest army to use.

I doubt it'll be Necrons, the codex is relativly old, and so would end up having rule changes later on when a new codex is relased.
Orks make more sense, they wont change for a while, and hell, look more fun to play

I saw it and thought it looked to me that it was for the summer campaign. I haven't kept up with rumors of what the summer campaign is supposed to be about though.

There's no reason why the teaser image has to show the same combatants as will be in the starter set.

A Necron vs Marine boxset would make sense, you could afford to balance the armies this way. No orks means that the balance can be maintained with two fairly sizable intro armies. Gw could squeeze in a second tactical squad for a legal list.
Also the Necrons need a new codex, with a second type of Troops and a light vehicle to go with it. Yes they are boring, but they need not be. It would be a good opportunity to promote them.

When I saw that I assumed it was a teaser for the new rule book.
If I follwed the rumors right, July is about the right time for that.
IIRC when 4th Edition came out they released the BGB followed by BFM.

July 12th for the new HC rulebook, September for the new boxset with minisized not-all-of-the-rules-book. The boxset has a large amount of orks and marines and is an insane deal for 60.00.

Mikhalia: Weren't you saying that nothing was on the radar for July in an earlier thread? If so, GW actually did a decent job of keeping us wondering when it would come out (even if the rules were leaked...).

Yep. About 6-8 weeks ago, GW told me, and I quote:
"No, we aren't doing another addition of 40k. Those are just rumors on Warseer. We wouldn't put out a big rules set like Apocalypse and turn around and put out a new set of rules for 40k"
Silly, stupid, trusting me. I believed them, and repeated what they said. Makes me look pretty gullible. They burnt a lot of trust on this one. I won't be repeating much of what I'm told from them unless it's actually in writing.

Two 3+ save armies would make for very dull games for what is intended to be an intro box.
The new box is definitely orks and marines. No necrons.

Ouch. That is a pretty big burn, especially considering that this is concerning retailer relations.
Oh well, its not like this sort of thing is new for GW concerning retailers. Old habits die hard and all that....

Yep, and the ironic thing is, I'm usually the one standing on a soapbox yelling "GW is treating retailers better" Overall, this was a minor thing, compared to the improvements in business between GW and retailers over the past couple of years.
But it burns, and I carry grudges forever.

I have a feeling that whoever told you probably had no idea. That being said, when I'm talking to a customer and I have no idea, I don't make stuff up, I say, "I have no idea."

@mikhaila: I had a similar thing when I worked in retail, a manufacture's rep made a similar promise. 2 months later he showed up with a completely new product. I asked why he lied to me, he denied it. I ended up calling his supervisor and reported it. this wasn't the first time this rep had done stuff like that, and while he wasn't fired, he got transferred from the Detroit office (a really big market for above ground pools) to the Green Bay office (a much smaller one).
My point is, you're a customer, dealing with a business. Just because it's business to business doesn't mean you can't complain about crappy service. I'm sure the rep will claim he meant it differently, but it doesn't take a ton of complaints to get a salesman sanctioned.

I think that is giving GW too much credit.
There is a bonafide PDF of those rules out there. Everyone is aware of that, especially GW and their minions.
I can only guess why the rep told Mikhaila that, but I would bet that it has a lot to do with sales. Damage control if you will.
Take a look at this scenario (which does happen)
Apocalypse just came out. It uses the 4th ed rules to use. GW is trying to sell the hell out of apocalypse. People wont buy apocalypse if they know a new rule set is coming out, possibly invalidating the apocalypse rules. GW loses sales.
Its the same reason why they deny a new army coming out until the last minute, so they can sell the rubes all of the stuff that they can. New codex comes out, and some options suddenly aren't as good or even legal under the new rules. Thus harder to sell certain models than they were able to prior to new codex.
No, this dude knew exactly what he was telling Mikhaila. I would also be willing to bet that saying such isn't his idea, but of his superiors at GW.

Absolutely wasn't my reps fault, we're very tight, and he's a non-BS type of guy. Theres a big information blackout starting at the top, and working it's way down.

I certainly hope you contacted the head of retail and asked them what the hell was going on... (it would be nice to figure out where the problem lies). (edit, i posted something earlier but forgot to read mikhaila's post, so I changed my reply)
that's really a bum deal, and you are usually the advocate for GW and their revised dealings with independant retailers. The worst part is that you tell your clientel this and they believe you and then GW pulls the rug out from underneath you and you are the one who will end up suffering, not them. that's just terrible.
