So I started pretty recently. I put together some basic troops. 2 units of 6 models with flamers. Did my first Lash Demon Prince. I'm waiting to start my second. I've been lurking around here on Dakka trying to learn the ropes. But I keep reading all these discussions about the new 5th edition rules and it worries me. If I start to pull in a direction that is going to become a poor choice tactically I'll hate myself for it. I'm a very competitive person when it comes to games, I know I'll have to lose for awhile. But I don't want to be another guy with a super flavorful army or just a bad army who loses constantly.

I first wanted to do a super heavy fire kind of army with lots of termies and Noise Marines. But then I heard that this thing called kill points is going to make my termies suck a left one. 3 points for a termie but only one for a termie in a troops slot? Thats a load of bull. Then I thought Nurgle marines would be the way to go, seeing as how the only scoring units will be troops. But then I start hearing talk that FnP is getting nurfed, wtf? Then I thought Zerkers in rhinos! But I'm hearing that vehicles will have more defense but less mobility by the word of the rules.

I'm just being too picky I know. But I don't want to waste my money on unoptimized choices. The people I play with are pretty cut-throat and if I don't follow in that path I'm going to get rolled over as often as a resident in an upscale nursing home. And I know for sure I don't want to lose all the time.

So, should I wait to buy more models for 5th? Or just work on the core of all my armies (2 Lash DPs, 2 units of 6 CSMs with flamers, 6 oblits) and then wait?

Once upon a time, I told myself it's better to be smart than lucky. Every day, the world proves me wrong a little more.

I'd work on your core (DP's, and Oblits) and decide which combination of troops choices you like.

Then I'd build it and give it a whirl.

There is no 'perfect' army out there, there's just the FOTM army (right now, that's Orks) and in a month it'll be Demons (for a month or two). Then it'll be smurfs, fanged smurfs, then rippy eldar.

Anyway, pick the troops you like and go with those. You can easily just sub in some troops and see how you like each flavor.

I personally favor Thousand Sons and Emperor's Children, because I can deal with every type of balanced army that exists. There is nothing wrong with PM, I just don't have a 'get pounded on' army style. I think Khorne Berserkers suck currently in 4th edition; but they'll be a bit better when they can start in a transport, be deployed 12", go 12", be deployed out 2", and run D6". If you go first, anyway; which works differently in 5th edition so it's a bit easier to get away with it.

Most times they get shot to pieces, but a bull rush of zerkers straight in your face does require you to play a very smart game in the one turn you have to kill them all or the impact will roll your army. Of course, if you go first and pop all the vehicles...it's not very hard to win.
