1. How detailed do you want to make categories? Does search allow for
cross referencing or boolean searches across categories?

2. Are we going for specific categories (Warhammer 40,000 tactics is a
category, for example) or do we want to classify things with two separate
tags (Warhammer 40,000 and Tactica as separate categories).

3. Are we categorizing Chaos 40k as Chaos AND Chaos Space Marines? Does
that mean Imperial Guard should be both Imperium AND Imperial Guard?

4. Did you want both Modeling AND Dakka Modeling FAQ as separate categories?

5. I see Editorial as a category. How often would that be used? And for what
kinds of articles? Ranting and raving? Soapbox?

6. Do you want two separate categories for Rules Discussion and YMDC? (I see it
in the Magic Cylinder article)

7. The Articles page is weird. Is the table structure in a wiki the same as in html? I'm
having trouble thinking about how to edit it.

Just some thoughts. Feel free to delete if this is not a discussion you want on the
regular forums. I'm just using it to think out loud.

1) The search feature is boolean (I believe), but it doesn't really utilize categories. It would still pick up those category words, but it doesn't really display the articles in a nice listing like the category page does.

Unfortunately, there is no way to do a cross-category seach like 'Warhammer 40,000' and 'Tactica' together and get a nice list of all the articles that fall into both (just do a search for both of those together to see what I mean).

Because of that is why I started making categories like 'Warhammer 40,000 tactics', so that I could have a nice page to link to from the sticky post in the 40K tactics forum. Eventually, when we have enough articles to warrant it, I would like to have a sticky post at the top of every applicable forum linking to articles that pertain to that particular forum.

2) I'd say you have your general categories:

*Tactica
*Rules Discussion
*Modeling
*Painting (I think we'll have enough modeling/painting articles that the two should probably be separate)
*Funny (should probably be 'Humor')
*Review
*Battle Report
*Fiction
*Army Profile
*Proposed Rules

Then you have your secondary categories that relate to Dakka forums. These are basically the Dakka forum name that you want the article to be linked from:

*Modeling
*Painting (both of these cross all forums so they can remain separate categories, I'll add a link to both categories to the sticky post in the modeling & painting forum tonight).
*Warhammer 40,000 Army List
*Warhammer 40,000 YMDC
*Warhammer 40,000 Tactics
*Warhammer 40,000 Proposed Rules
*Warhammer 40,000 Battle Report
*Warhammer 40,000 Fiction
*Warhammer Fantasy YMDC
*Warhammer Fantasy Tactics
*Warhammer Fantasy Battle Report
etc, etc, etc.

Remember, the GOAL of these categories is to provide an easy link to corresponding subject matter from each particular forum.

Finally, you have faction and game name categories. Basically, if you think that someone would want to search for all the articles based on that faction or game, then we should have a category for it.

So yeah, any article about the Imperial Guard should probably have the 'Warhammer 40,000' and 'Imperial Guard' and categories at the very least.

Remember, we can always go back and add categories later, so I wouldn't worry about going too crazy with these army/game categories until we need them.

For example, if I post a Valhallan Imperial Guard army we don't really need a 'Valhallan' category until we get a second valhallan article added. I guess we could have an 'Imperium' or 'Imperial Armies' category for any articles made about IG, Space Marines or Inquisitorial forces. . .

3) Yeah, Since there are differing Chaos forces, we should indeed give them both 'Chaos Space Marines' and '40K Chaos' category. I think we probably should have an overriding 'Imperial' or 'Imperial Armies' category.

4) The Dakka modeling FAQ is a separate category because I took the modeling FAQ out of the forum and broke it up into many different parts (I think it would have been too long as a single article). Therefore, I wanted to give it a specific category that would make it easy to find all the parts from a link in the modeling and painting forum sticky post.

So yeah, there should be 'modeling', 'painting' and 'dakka modeling faq' categories.

5) No idea. I guess it is just there for people that want to do a general (well-written) rant about something.

6) Yep, as for why I explained it in #2 (I hope).

7) It is tricky. try messing around with it and just doing 'previews' to see how it actually works. Or if you want you could paste the whole thing into the sandbox and then mess around with it there.

A couple of things to add to yakface's comments...

'Funny' is used instead of Humour/Humor as it has a consistent spelling across all types of English so is better suited as a title. Any other spelling-agnostic word to the same effect would be fine as well. Modeling I turn a blind eye too since one of our major forums is spelled that way (as opposed to Modelling).

The wiki tables are identical in structure to HTML tables, but instead of writing out the whole tag, they just use those abbreviated forms. For example, they support TABLE, TR, TH, and TD tags, and you can provide specific formatting to any of those fields too (check out the paint comparison article for a much clearer table than the articles home page).

Cool.

When you say you want a secondary category that links to
the forums, does that mean all the stuff from modeling
should also have a category for the dakka Modeling forum?

Good call on number 3, yak. We'll need to distinguish
between 40k Chaos and Fantasy Chaos (especially since
the thing can't cross reference for us, grr)

legoburner: You spell funnie.

Do we have criteria for including either Fiction or Battle
Reports?

No, if you look at the sticky in the modeling forum you'll see links to both the 'painting' and 'modeling' category pages (well, the 'painting' one isn't active right now because of a little forum bug lego will be fixing soon).

Again, think of it like this:

In each forum, we aim to have a sticky with a link to the article category page that fits that forum. Since 40K and WHFB have different forums of the same type (tactics for each) we need to have two separate categories so that there is a quick easy link to all 40K tactics articles.

Since modeling and painting are two separate categories that are both represented by a single forum (disregarding the blog forum) those two categories are fine (as we can have a link to both categories in that forum).

Criteria for fiction or battle reports? Just good quality stuff that people would want to read. Battle reports should obviously feature a good amount of quality pictures and detailed descriptions.
