It was somewhat taken out of my hands (for now at least) O&G it is, fitting i should be returning to my roots...
Going through the army book, orcs appear viable in attrition wars (through enough toughness 4 things at something it will eventually break i think) but is magic really necessary? im looking at investing in either a block of 25 (level 2 shaman leading them) and the dispelling banner (+1 dice per rank) or should i just get another orc commander in a block of 24 with 2 dispell scrolls for less points?

Tips apperciate gents, and for now...the waaaggggghhhhh is on.

Cynon,

It depends what you want your army to do. If you're not gonna go magic heavy, I would look at taking an Orc Commander, a BSB, and a level 1 shaman with the two dispel scrolls. That should give you enough anti-magic to get your line into combat.

Personally, I love the Orc & Goblins magic lore. At 2000 points, I would probably take two level 2 shamans, an orc warboss, and a BSB. That would give me a good bashy hero, the ability to help stabilize a relatively low LD army, and decent chances of getting off your combat enhancing spells. Orcs are cheap enough that you can still built a good list around that kinda of hero core.

Take care,
Mike K.

Panzerleader has explained probably the most common O&G set up for characters.

However always consider a black orc warboss rather than an orc warboss for the ability to reduce the effect of animosity.

For the mages, the most common set up is a couple of level 2 gobbo shamans with 2 scrolls and the staff of sneaky stealin.
I like the orc magic list much better than the gobbo, but with 2 level 2's you can throw 3 dice each at 1 spell each in the hopes of getting off the higher casting score.

ahh so its pretty standard to use a couple mages then. would it be worth better points to just use a lord caster and just get melee heroes then? im not (nor have i ever been) too keen on magic, i prefer to get up close and personal, so im mostly just looking to mitigate spells till i can get into hadn to hand.

Cynon,

If you want to go magic light, then go with the two smaller mages. Mage lords tend to get on the expensive side and with a low LD army, your lord slot is better used on a Warboss.

And if you love hand to hand, the O&G lores have spells that are perfect for you. Some spells will move you into hand to hand, others will let you strike first and reroll hits...pretty awesome little list.

I think its a very viable army to balance a medium magic capability with a strong emphasis on assault.

Take care,
Mike K.

If you don't want to go magic heavy I would still recommend taking a scroll caddy so you have the ability to deny game changing spells.

"But remember that there are over 1000 chapters of spase marienz! So the SM codex has to cover over 1000 different kinds of spase marienz! Codex CSM only has to cover 1 kind (the Chaos kind). And I don't even think Eldar are a kind of spase marienz at all. Hurr!"

It's a company which specialises in the selling of plastic representations of Elves, Goblins, and 9 foot tall superhuman soldiers from the future - have you ever considered that, as adults, it is US that is intruding upon THEIR world?

If you want to go really magic light take:

Gobbo mage on wolf chariot, level 1, 1 dispel scroll, item that if bearer killed he blows up doing d6 st5 wounds to enemy units in B2B.

Use up scroll turn 1 and then launch him at the enemies hardest unit (hopefully they will be empire and swing a detatchment around as well ) you kill a couple of troops with the chariot and wolves and crew, then their champ strikes back and kills your mage, you blow up.
Hillarity ensues.

I got it from the army list of a guy who won the colonial GT last year with common goblins. I'll track down the list and post it in the next couple of days.
