Hi I'm new to 40k so far I own a grand total of 2 XV8s and a codex, I made a 1k list for a mostly static tau army and was hoping for feedback so I can tweak it before spending what little $$ I have, thank you for your help.

1000 PNTS EVEN.

This is going to sound stupid, but maybe include some kroot somewhere-reason being that if an army, say orks or Nids make it to your lines its going to be an unholy bloodbath...tau not really likeing combat much.

The kroot would act as a deterent or an effective counter attack if combat was joined, they wouldnt have to go anywhere during the game if you didn't want them to

Nock off the ion head and take a kroot squad, they will usually see you through at least long enough for you to disengage and relocate to a better firing position.

As for Tau sucking in close combat, while this is pretty much true I have had Aun' Shi and a unit of firewarriors knock out a bloodthirster. (though admittedly it had been hit twice by rail suits.)

yeh, one of my mates took out a terminator squad with some fire warriors once...but if enough men get through then its never good.

As a none tau player the amount of fire power does worry me abit, but then thats what Tau armies excell at!

Thank you all for your help I'm making some of my first purchases this weekend and even without the list completely settled yet, this has helped me narrow down what I should be getting at least to start I'm gonna run with a hammerhead and box o fire war, today and move on from there next paycheck but more feedback would be great too.

I got most of this list today any thoughts on how I may want to go about upping this list to a 1500 list, in my league regular games are 1000 but if you make it to the finals (ya right for my first time but still) the game ups to 1500, I know it's weird but thats how they do it here, who knows maybe it's not even weird I'm just starting out. Anyway my point was what should I think about adding to this list as I scale it up?

Increase the size of the fire warrior squads maybe? It's always tricky o know without playing a few games first-play test what youve got and add in anything that will help your overall strategy by plugging up any hole you find

Okay...

For starters take the kroot they are necessary... they can absorb/delay any assault directed at your immobile firebase...

I would suggest you change your current commander'o (2 weapons of your choice, VRT, and STIM) and use that to go into combat with a big fast moving enemy assault unit and assault them, at the end of your turn, endure in thier turn then jump out and have your whole army attack the target squad...

I would also drop the ionhead (you already have enough anti-MEQ) and instead take a 4-man stealth team... this will help you against masses of enemy troops and they give you a little more jump-shoot-jumpiness...

IMHO, these ideas will really turn your list into a much better list with more verisitility...

EDIT- Also i think that only 2 shield drones is better because once you lose the shield drones the broadsides start taking morale checks... losing the 140 pt broadsides but only really losing the 60 point drones does not sound like a good thing to me...

What is with your avoidance of Crisis suits? Do you just not want to field what everyone else is fielding or what? I can see no other reason not to take more.

The Ion Cannon Hammerhead isn't that good. Take A Railgun instead, the submunition is better than the Ion Cannon and with the new Blast Weapon rules will be more reliable.

For static tau at 1500 pts IMHO these would be good additions...

More broadsides... they make up for the lack of hammerheads... maybe one or two crisises using them to help the commander...

I'd also suggest also having sniper drone teams (3) and bulinkg out 4 firewarrior teams and taking 2 kroot squads...

From what i've seen shadowsun is always a good addition to a static army...

I'd also suggest giving your broadsides ASS or TL at 1500...

@gorjira316-No he doesn't need the rail head just for submunissions its way too expensive for just that purpose... and he doesn't need hammerheads at all IMHO 'cause i think he shoul use that freed up slot to take sniper drone teams and more broadsides...
