I have finished my basic CSM army now and i've just converted a set of nurgle bikers using the FW sets. They are heavily greenstuffed and posed and I want the paintjob to match.

I usually paint nurgle the dark greeny colour but I really like the more bone colour people use.

What I'm looking for is something like this:

Does anyone have any tips/methods/colour lists of how to achieve this please... Obviously I am not aiming for quite as high a standard as the pic but that gives a basic idea.

Hi mate, I haven't painted nurgle in some time, but I'll do my best for you.

The pinkish areas of the the model (like the lascannon arm) look to me to be done with dwarf flesh basecoat blended up to rotting flesh, just using different ratios of each until you have pure rotting flesh on the very highest points. Next water down some brown (or chestnut, or purple it's up to you) ink a lot and add a touch of pva glue or washing up liquid to the mixture. It should be about 10 parts water to one part ink. Wash this glaze over the area, it should only slightly tint it. Follow this with more glazes of extremely thin green ink and other rotten colours you want to be in there. Green and brown are my favourite for this, good and slimy, purple can be nice, but be careful, it's quite powerful, make sure it's really thin then do that layer first. With these layers they should be really subtle, if you're not seeing much colour, good, ust do another layer when dry, don't try making them thicker. Once you're happy with the look of this, re-apply the very edge highlights, or leave depending on your taste. If the highlight then looks off, you can always glaze it to look better. Repeat the glaze and highlight stages untill you're happy. Glazes are my absoloute favourite thing and use them on 90% of the colours on a model.

For a more bone look, basecoat with either snakebite leather, khaki green, a bone/*tiny bit of*black mix or a little of all mixed together, just play around with the colour untill you feel it'sright. Highlight up by mixing in rotting flesh, then use bone and bone/white for the final highlights. Glaze as before with green/brown washes, repeat the highlight and wabamm! Done.

That's just a quick explanation, it's a matter of experimentation and finding wht suits you, I'd heartily reccommend glazes if you don't already use them, they really make colours stand out, look richer, or look really dirty and nurgley. Hope it helps.

Have an old can of ogre flesh spray somewhere so may use that!

Bubonic Brown with a touch of black will give a sickly pale brown with a touch of green. Wash with Chestnut ink as a shade. You'll need to play around with the highlights and/or mix ups with Bubonic Brown/black/bleach bone to get the white-ish color your looking for.

Hm... I will probably go with something a little different from these.

Start our with Snakebite leather mixed about 1/1 with Skull White. After that is on smooth, layer up mixing in more and more Skull white. If you want it to be a little darker, use bleached bone rather than skull white.

That won't give you the pink on the mini though. For that pink, you might consider mixing in a little scab or crimson gore into the base color, and still work up to your white.

it's been a couple years since i painted him, but i think i remember the layers...scorched brown over black undercoat, bestial brown, bleached bone, and then white highlights...simple...
for a scheme that i plan to recreate again, i don't like to deal with custom mixes...so it's just layers of colour straight out of the pot...

to make the armour a bit funky after all that clean bone was painted on he was givin' some light streaks of watered down scaly green, purple, and yellow...snakebite leather works good for the rust streaks, though i recommend bloodstone from p3 for rust....

the mud on the feet and greaves is just some scorched brown stippled on with a large brush...

Also, how do you do Typhus' sexah scythe blade? Is it rust colour with boltgun on edges or..?

the scythe, along with all the other bronze on the mini is a base of tin bitz, then a layer of dwarf bronze, a wash of scaly green, and the bronze with a bit of mithril silver mixed in for the highlights...
the blade itself is washed down a bit more than the rest of the bronze to show that it is toxic...

Ok, have the armour painted up now. I tried the first glaze but it left a stainy water finish which didn't look good... Am I using too much paint in there?

Any other suggestions for how to remedy this?

I use inks for glazes not paints. You can do it with paint but you'll need some vallejo glaze medium to add to the paint/water. If you're just going paint+water it won't flow properly into the areas you want it and will just look a bit dull and stained. Sorry if I wasn't clear before, inks are the way to go!

in my chaos army blog there's some info on how I painted my bone colored chaos marines. I'm not even half done painting the army, but I really like how it's coming out.

Basically all I did was use bleached bone as an undercoat, then I made a wash using a dark brown color, water and matte medium (you can get this in an art store where they sell acrylic paints). The medium is great, it really helped the color stick in the cracks and gives it almost a dipped look in some parts, but without dipping since it's "matte" medium, it also dulls the shine from the paint and helps give the model a worn & dirty look.

For my deathguard when I finally get to them, I'll be using the same wash but over rotting flesh instead of beached bone

Necros, I love the look of the matte medium but unfortunately cannot seem to find it in the UK... Anyone have any ideas where this is available/what it's called?

I tried a couple of glazes and they're looking ok... Much better with iks. Roughly how many glazes do people usually put on a model of each colour?

Winsor and Newton do a decent matte medium if I recall correctly, and you should be able to find it at local art stores. It comes in the same style bottles as the varnish so look out for them:
