Well, the good news is that his list is really, really bad, so once you have a few games under your belt, it shouldn't be much of a problem.
Actually, his list is so bad that I wonder if he was cheating/didn't know the rules... there are some things that are kind of suspicious.
1) Was he rolling for morale properly? His termagaunts, hormagaunts (hereafter called "gaunts" for short

), carnifex, and lictors all have to pass leadership tests if they want to move
if they start his turn not in combat and with no members of their squad within 12" of his tyrant. If the gaunts fail this test, they fall back toward the tyrant if it's alive, or off the board if it's not. And the gaunts are only fearless if they're within that range of the tyrant; otherwise, they have to take morale checks like normal, and only have Ld5. Kill the tyrant, and he has no other synapse in his list... most of his army will run off the board if you kill that one model.
2) Did he roll for reserves to have his spore mines come in, or did he just automatically deep strike them on turn 1 (which should be impossible)? If he did all that right, then he was just incredibly lucky to kill your tank early in the game with a spore mine. (Edit: Ah, forgot he had a biovore. If the mine was from that, yeah, he could theoretically kill the tank on turn one, but, again, pretty extreme luck).
3) He has to roll a 6 to hit a skimmer in close combat, and can only do glancing hits. Again, if he did that and still killed your speeder with a lictor, very lucky once again. And remember that your speeders are faster than his guys... they can keep their distance!
4) How on earth did he kill all those marines and terminators with hardly anything but gaunts? Did he try to tell you that they don't get armor saves? Hormagaunts are okay in close combat, but most of his army should bounce off of your T4 guys with 3+ and 2+ saves.
So, yeah, basically either your opponent just had the luckiest dice rolls of his entire life against a new player, or he skipped over a few rules when playing. Maybe both. If anything sounds fishy, I'd encourage you both to go over the main rules and the tyranid codex to make sure that he's doing everything right.
